Massive Thargoid Base

Much like anything else, especially "Space Legs", if there isn't any associated game play involved, couldn't care less. Don't get me wrong, it looks cool, but looking cool only holds me over for 5 minutes.

No gameplay involved?
-Searching derelict ships
-Exploring abandoned stations
-Delving into creepy alien structures
-Infiltrating enemy bases

edit: Reading again, I see I may have misunderstood you. Yes without gameplay it would become boring quick. Walking around on an empty planet surface isn't all that interesting.

That's a lot of assuming. Searching, exploring, delving, infiltrating are things that aren't rewarding unless there are things to find and interact with, and interesting ways to do said things. As much as taking screen shots drives many tourists on this forum, it's not game play in any sense of the word for me, even Pokeman Snap! was more engaging as a picture generator and that game was on rails. If that is all there is going to be, again if, then I couldn't care less. I'm not going to speculate that there will be more to it since that's part of how I manage expectations.

is it thargoid? or is it from the guardians?

it would b quite straneg when this is a thargoid "base" to be so empty and free of any defense systems or whatever.
Also given how covered it is by the ground fo the planet it seems to be more of a ruin or abandonned place at all that must be really old.
But then who know sif FD even pays attention to such details.

I don't really understand all this craving for space legs?... I mean it would have been in the game instead of the SRV! but it's not really practical to explore a planet on foot when you can have wheels?

yeah I see, all those archeoloogicans who drive tractors at excavation sites.

sry but stuff like the guardian ruins and such would very much be investigated outside of vehicles isntead of drving around in space buggies. So the lack of space legs isn't adding immersion, because it is just an eye brow raising logic. And it will further lead FD to make superstructures our SRV's can enter if they want us to explore something. And of course all aliens constructed their objects vehicle friendly. So the lack of space legs makes the devs design a game to fit the current movement possibilities. But this will have to bedn the universe to fit those movement possibilities and tis will generate illogical things.

Planet? Yes!
Inside of a Base? No!
Think It would be odd if one drove around the inside of their houses in a 4-wheeler

it's anecessarity all those 24/7 0G pilots wouldn't have any leg muscles left to walk, so they only can drive around anymore. Thats what happens when you skip gravity day.

Well lets hope when the first explorers get inside they press the right button

I think it's thargoid. Remember their ships biological by design, this is how they are defeated in Elite 1.

If anyone of you is also watching The Expanse (great Sci-Fi series)...I'm thinking that Elite Dangerous story is going the very same route but using the game's lore of course.

In David Braben's interview he said something like perhaps what we all think is not what is really happening. If you are following The Expanse (major spoiler of the series coming so read at will) there is something similar going on with the "protomolecule" which is basically like an alien "life form" but engineered by the humans themselves. Then that "protomolecule" is "evolving" into whatever "it" wants...as seen in the latest episode (actually it was in the previous one), an humanoid alien life form appeared for the first time.

What if (following the lore of Elite) the Alliance (compare this to what Mao is for The Expanse, the actual man/enterprise behind the "protomolecule") is behind these "alien encounters" and all the Barnacle related stuff ("Protomolecule" in The Expanse). Alliance is the most silent faction in the game (for now) but in Elite's lore it sure isn't.
While doing tons of missions for passengers I saw a lot of new data/info explaining how each faction became what it is now, all this "cold war" that is always happening in the game is also explained and some story when Thargoids were "defeated" or almost "eradicated" because of an engineered virus by the humans (correct me if I'm wrong with this)...there is a rumour (again correct me lore masters!) that the Alliance "helped" or saved some of the remnants of the Thargoids, and then they finally "vanished for ever".

With that said, what if Alliance gathered some biotechnology from the Thargoids and made experiments with it and then engineered somehow the Barnacles? (probably this was mentioned thousands of times in the Cannon thread, but too much stuff to read and learn there)

I mean Barnacles and these ships are alien in nature but I think they are not what we really think they are. Humans are behind all this, the Alliance is my best bet and their true role will come in the near future when the true story unfolds...But one thing is sure that the Federation and the Empire (think of it as Earth and Mars in The Expanse) knows something about this or at least suspect what is going on...but maybe they don't even think about Alliance being behind all this.

Totally out of topic but damn even if I'm quite wrong about that the "only" thing that comes to my mind is the more simple explanation...a new alien race is coming or becoming in front of our eyes (like an event that happens each millenia or whatever), or Thargoids are just back to say "hi".

That's why this game is so cool...Frontier is putting the story right there for us to discover with little to non narrative but with a living and evolving world. It moves slowly but it gets exciting step by step.

I think it is a generation thing, myself as a VR user I am dreading space legs. ( not Eva ). But I guess if u are from the CS and other shooter generation you cannot have fun without it. Here I am far too old to Enjoy it

You need to read the books. Don't believe this inner planet propaganda!

I probably should do that...but it will be like reading Games of Thrones to then watch the series (with all its changes and stuff) with little to not emotions related if I know what is coming. I better stay with the series for now so I can still have some surprises, you know.

But again, I should read more because it is quite interesting...I like everything about it and how Elite Dangerous somehow has something similar going on...or not. ;)

I'm sure this has been pointed out before, or if not, should have been.

If those barnacles are genetically modified lifeforms designed to produce meta-alloys, or has been speculated a method of "growing" ships underground, then they are not free booty for any passing stranger to help themselves to. The owners of said barnacles is going to take a dim view of the (as they would perceive it) theft. If..and it is an "if" at present, the barnacles belong to the same race as the owners of the artefact and probes, then we have been giving away the location of bases (via "bombing" bases) and showing off the fact we have been using the meta alloys for engineering our ships by actively seeking alien interdiction after possessing the probes etc.
Also, if ED lore is correct, we also tried to exterminate the Thargoids.
It's all a bit Jack and the Beanstalk we've robbed, possibly committed ecological vandalism, trespassed (if the latest trailer is anything to go by, that's not a human base), and we are going to pat ourselves on the back and hand out medals if we defeat said aliens.

I'm not saying that we should hand back all materials and say sorry, I doubt the devs are going to let that happen, and it would make for a dumb game, but I just want it registered that we are in all probability not entirely the good guys, and morally we are on very thin ice. The cry of "Hey! we didn't know they were yours!" just ain't gonna wash.

Personally, I think when the aliens do get all frisky, the rush for solo-play is going to be server breaking :)

The system with the grey gas giant has been identified.

Where will you be on go-live day?
What will you be doing?

Off topic rant:
It's not so much about the CS generation, cause frankly that would probably include me, although I hate CS with an absolute passion, worst most boring game ever.
The thing with people who think 'legs' will be so awesome and so freeing, well honestly they are delusional people.

The game as is, now. Is designed to all be accessed through the comfort of your pilots seat, I pull up the starport menu, I click missions or commodites whatever, a few more clicks and I'm on my way.
Why on god's green earth would I want that replaced with having to get out of my ship, take a buss to the faction's rep office to see if he's got a mission for me, repeat for the other factions, then stop by the commodities trade office so I can punt off the 4 tons of telemetry suites I never asked for ?

Or we could just look at a game who has added legs post development and a community settling time.
Eve online.
They hyped "Walking in stations" for years, and what did we get after about four years?
We got a large, dirty janitors closet with a ratty couch, and a locked door.
The gameplay consisted of walking, slowly, to the couch, clicking the variously placed buttons for accessing the same services windows as before, only through a much more cumbersome UI, now of course they wheren't complete idiots so they left all the old buttons and keyboard shortcuts in, so why would I walk over to that couch ?

Well, I didn't and their very next patch to this update made the whole legs débacle superfluous and you could just choose not to load the ratty janitors closet.
A shame really cause they spent a lot of time and resources making something most ended up thinking was an utter waste of harddrive space.

I hope FD is smart enough to realise what kind of game they have made already and that they should keep working on it and not some dubious feature that really doesn't belong in the core concept.
I would suspect it would be a lot easier for FD to make more buggies, fighters and ships.
Why stop at 31?
Back to topic.

I get the succinct feeling these bases and the active machine is less nefarious.
And more like a friendly attempt at communication, via some odd treasure hunt.
Or it's a reality show broadcast to their ships for entertainment.

Watch the silly flesh bags bungle around our treasure hunt obstacle course.
