So Master of Orion is getting rebooted.

It'll be out on Steam Early Access this coming Friday

I remember playing the first and second games in the series when I was a kid. Those were my introduction to 4x strategy games, and I loved them. :p I find myself really looking forward to this new version, despite myself. After all, #3 was a big disappointment. They do have quite an impressive voice cast lined up. :D

This is being made by the World of Tanks studio. I've no real experience with them and so don't have a clue as to how well they'll handle the license. Supposedly they have some of the original devs on board for this one, though, which is reassuring.

MOO just had a soft launch on Steam and GOG if anyone is interested in picking it up today.

I heard the combat is crap. Turn based MOO2 combat was awesome!
Not sure if the ship customization is good either at this point.

Combat is real time (but pausable/slowable) and indeed needs a lot of love right now. Ship customization is pretty good so far, I think. However, given the combat situation I'm not sure it's really all that worthwhile.

Perhaps I'm just not very good at these games anymore, but my current playthrough as the Mrrshan seems.... difficult. Not that I'm getting creamed by the AI (far from it - the AI doesn't do much), but it's just a real pain to make progress. It takes forever to move fleets around the map. By the time they arrive they're technologically out of date. Then when they're inevitability destroyed it takes forever and a day to build up a new fleet. This is mid-game I think, so I just don't think things are balanced quite right yet.

I got into a war with the Alkari and came *this* close to destroying their home world, but my fleet was wiped out. By the time I had rebuilt the AI had already moved in and finished them off. Now I'm fighting two other fronts half a map away against an AI that never goes on the offensive, and it's all just so tedious.

So, step up in graphics and step or two down in gameplay. Disappointing but not surprising.
The original MOO is still the King.

As much as I loved MOO and MOO2:BAA, I've decided to stick with Stellaris for my 4x fix. Even moreso now that they've got Alex from Fallen London/Failbetter in to do writing for them.

I think the new MOO game is a great beginner game to the 4x genre. It doesn't do anything truly remarkable, but everything it does, it does well.

I think a game like Stellaris is for the truly advanced 4x players out there. There is so much you can do, but it looks like it would be overhwelming to anyone not looking for the nitty gritty management in that game.

I picked up MOO the first week it came out of development. But, as with most games lacking a strong narrative, I got bored and put it down a month later. Even still, thats my personal preferance in gaming. Not a reflection on how the game is overall.

If your looking for a simple 4x game, and you like all the all star voice actors in this game, I'd highly recommend it to you.
