Material Collection....

I found a spot that has these data materials. I went to location/settlement and couldn't find where to scan for them within the location. I only found one "Data Point" (pop up pole). I scanned it but don't seem to have any record of downloads to my Encoded Data inventory. What am i missing? don't seem to have any record of downloads to my Encoded Data inventory. What am i missing? Also, when/if I figure it out, how many times do i need to scan to satisfy Elvira Martuuk (Kinetic Resistant Shield Generator)?

you need to crack the installation ... you scan the first pole, you get a timer to scan the next pole, once you have scanned all in time (basically), you get engineer materials.

cmdr djadjok has amazing maps to do so:

that said - it's more time effective to get other data and trade in at material traders (encoded). my main source of data to trade in for what i need are missions, some shipscanning in supercruise and wake scanning.

I suggest you look at Jameson's crash site. All that data can be obtained there just by scanning 4 beacons. Much easier than what you referring to. I get most of my data and manufactured mats from Dav's Hope. Spending there one full day only collecting stuff once a month, month and a half maybe... And obviously trading part as needed...

I do the Jameson's site. It is quick and fairly painless if a little bit dull. Although I have racked up a few bounties and been hunted by a Viper Mk3 for scanning the wrong things at surface installations :), oops. So depending how much 'fun' and 'excitement' you want to have, you choose a location to get encoded data.

Bug Killer site.
When you're bored pop off a few shots at the Goids and see how far you can get in the buggy. 🥳

If you want to mix things up a bit, look for Planetary scan missions which offer MEF as a reward and then go and do them in a ship, rather than using the SRV.

Most of the planetary bases that are your destinations for these missions will also have the data-point "caravans" (usually 3 or 4) which you can scan first to get extra Encoded mat's, then you'll get another wad of Encoded mat's from scanning the mission-target terminal and then you'll get paid in MEF too.

To be clear, look for missions that specify low/medium/high security outposts.
These are the missions that take you to permanent bases, rather than the bases that pop up after you hunt around a search zone.

Long as you're not already Hostile to the faction, the base won't start shooting at you while you fly around, scanning the caravans.
It will start shooting when you scan the mission target but you can just boost outta there and head straight up into orbit.

Honestly, farming the Jameson site and then trading for mat's you need is probably more efficient but, lordy, it's dull!

Jameson is dull, but 30 minutes worth of relogging and you have completely filled the bins for Atypical Encryption Archives (G4), and Adaptive Encryption Captors (G5), as well as picked up at least a few Cracked Industrial Firmware (G3), and Modified Embedded Firmware (G5). Unless you are trying to fill all of your Human Data bins using it, it's not too much of a chore to trade the data found there for things you need, and then go out there now and again to top off.

Plus everyone should visit Jameson's crash site at least once in their career with the Pilot's Federation.

Planetary surface scan missions are your friend.

1-2m credits, potentiality G5 data rewards and just a single pole to scan which gives you data. Installation scans are more stackable, but depending on the type of facility can be harder to crack for data rewards, as they can be well defended, and you need to do the multipoint scan for data materials.

Also:
  • target any ship in front of you when flying in sc for s chance of a data reward.
  • hit up outbreak or famine stations for easy-to- stack source missions for goods with optional data or material rewards.
  • blat a low intensity cz and scan all the wakes after ships jump out.
  • hack megaship data transmitters

Basically, anything but god-awful relogging at a single location.

To collect data from settlements you need to scan between 2-4 different data points with your data link scanner before the timer in the top right info panel expires, scanning another data point adds additional time. You'll trigger the defences after completing the first scan. If you're using a ship instead of the SRV be careful, the ground defences and any patrolling NPCs will make short work of an unengineered ship searching for the other data points.

You should also forget about the kinetic and explosive resistant shield modifications, unless it's for a PvP frag/multicannon counter build, as both make a base shield's thermal weakness much worse and stock shields already have fairly high resistances to kinetic and explosive damage.

A reinforced shield mod slightly improves resistance to both, but using the thermo block experimental, with a thermal resist booster, will result in a +30% resistance to thermal damage, vastly improving your shielding verses lasers and any incendiary munitions that happen to be fired your way.

If you have any spare utility mounts add a resistance augmented booster, maybe a heavy duty booster or two, and blaze your own trail through scores of Newly Provided Components.

You can empty your entire ammo at those Interceptors and they can barely feel a tickle from your SRV guns. They just laugh and then ignore you.

Thanks for the quick reply and link to website/maps. Good stuff.

Sounds like sage advice regarding mods. Very much appreciated.
