Hello Fellow Commanders!

I would like to put forward a suggestion that may benefit us in terms of the Engineers aspect of the game. Currently, the only way to obtain the precious materials and data is from salvage, prospecting or scanning wakes and vessels. These processes can take hours to collect some decent resources. (Which there is nothing wrong with that, I actually enjoy blasting rocks with my SRV and exploring). but there is nothing worse than spending all that time in gathering resources and unlocking engineers to find out that you are missing very rare components to upgrades.

This is why I would like to suggest the idea of Material Stores in various star-ports and Engineers facilities. Materials and Data are available for sale in themed star ports. for example, manufactured materials such as chemical composites and various pieces may be available at industrial star ports whereas iron and organic rock materials are available at refineries and so forth... This would still incorporate a bit of effort to obtain the materials whilst making it much faster to do so. Engineer bases sell all required materials but for 100% extra cost to earn some means of an income (always wondered why the do all this for free?)

the costs of materials should be reasonable to match the rarity of the specific item and would probably be best to increase by powers of ten to keep it neat. for example;

very common=50cr (100cr when doubled with engineer)
common=500cr (1,000cr with engineer)
moderate=5,000cr (10,000 with engineer)
rare=50,000cr (100,000 with engineer)
very rare=500,000cr (1,000,000 with engineer)

this also creates a tiering between players in that beginners cant generally afford such sums of money. As far as cost goes I personally would prefer to spend 1M and get it done with than to spend countless hours getting the materials I need. I am sure others probably feel the same too!! :)

With game balancing it isn't too much of an impact. because currently nothing stops a determined player (like me) from upgrading every aspect of my ship with engineer upgrades. And in The entirety of me playing Elite I have never had a battle with another player. And if I did there is also a likelihood of them having engineer upgrades as well. So we would be on equal footing anyway.

Nope. The entire point of engineers is looting and crafting. Buying them renders the entire mechanic pointless. Might as well just put engineered modules for sale and cut out the middlemen.
 
When I first saw the topic i thought it was the other type of store. As in storage. This is something I'd support. I don't like the able to buy off the market as i think it cheapens the game. I'd even support warehouse style. I.e you get a certain amount from the pilots association and if you need/want more you need to rent more space. Perhaps at a planet bound facility. After all, this is what you do in real life if you need more temp storage. I'm going with planet based storage because stations have limited storage. Of course the ability to move items around, like we can do with modules... Since these are actually counted as normal cargo, i really don't see a great need. I suppose it'd be nice to not have to take up module space with cargo racks or fly a cargo containing ship out first. Himmm, well this starts this. But I think more discussion is needed...
 
Yeah, have to agree that the whole setup is there so that the disgustingly rich don't have an advantage when it comes to getting the mats. This idea counters that.
 
Yeah you all have really good points here haha. I kind of thought that this was a flop. hence why it was my first suggestion I've done.

Having a second look I can see how it would cheapen it a bit. As I said before I actually don't mind a bit of exploring. but I guess I got a bit impatient with this one. It was only the other day did I unlock Bill Turner only to find out I didn't have the materials to complete 4-5 grade upgrades on plasma accelerator, so I went for short range blaster with the bleeding effect out of impatience and now the thing cuts off at just over 1km range. (blue projectile is worth it though :) ) hence in my frustration I posted this haha

thank you all for your feed back though! And I too really like that idea of material storage! Perhaps you could put it forward? always bugs me how I have to keep deleting materials. renting or just having additional storage at facilities would easily change this haha

that is an option I guess. I do have low level friends that may be in need to a material starter kit hehe

at least that way I spose you could get rid of unwanted materials whilst lending your fellow brothers a hand
