in odysey is there a limit to the amount of goods collected for upgrades etc. I have had to dump my bpckpack when ttrying to reenter my ship

yes. Look at the bottom of any of the storage pages and it is shown

Go to bartender, trade your low value stuff for high value stuff, sell what you don't need. The Odyssey storage requires manual micromanagement.
