maximum ranks in each faction

I heard somewhere that there is a maximum rank that you earn when you can no longer change factions and get a high rank in that faction. Is this true? If I get a rank where I can purchase a clipper or python, can I change factions to get a high rank to be able to purchase their top ship?

You don't have to "choose" between any of the three governments.

Technically, you can't even join them.
So feel free to rank up to Baron with the Empire to purchase an Imperial Clipper and make Ensign with the Federation for the Dropship if you like.

You can hold Ranks with Empire and Federation and be Allied to all three governments if you wish.
Every Player basically remains an independent Commander, regardless of Ranks or Reputation earned with any Faction.

Apart from the two above-mentioned ships, all other Ships are currently freely available to everyone.

Thanks FalconFly, I did not want to be locked in to only one type of faction ship. My goal is to experience all of them. If I go higher than ensign, I can still go over to the empire and rank up without penalty, right?

That is correct and exactly what I'm doing at the moment; working my imperial rep for my clipper.

Currently I am a knight in the Empire and a Petty officer in the Federation..... 2 more ranks in empire and 3 in federation and I can get both ships... even though I will probably still be hanging around in my cobra....

It's not too difficult to do. It'd be nice if the Alliance actually had something more to it than the name 'Alliance' though. I guess someone called out sick and forgot to finish it.

If you're careful with missions, etc.. you can keep all three at Allied and retain your ranks. Once you have the faction ships, if that's what you're after, you can go to war with whichever one(s) you want. :D

Oooh I like that. being allied with all three. But I guess you still have to war with the smaller factions withen each alliance. That's what Im doing now. Im in federation space but not taking missions that favor the independants. they are getting pretty upset with me

I don't think they intend to. The Alliance is most definitely the weakest of the powers - the setup is sort of Cold War with the Federation being the First World, the Empire the Second World, and the Alliance the Third World. I think a big part of the reason they don't force players to choose just one side is because they never intend the three sides to be "balanced".
