Maximum resolution supported

Has there been any news on the highest resolution Elite: Dangerous is likely to support? Sorry if this has already been covered (I did search!). :)

2560 x 1440 (WQHD)? Or up to 4K?

Thanks,

John

It's not determined yet. I think it certainly supports WQHD for now, not sure about 4k. Let's hope Mike or other dev jumps in and gives clear answer. It's their engine, I think they will have no problem extend it to 4k resolution.

I am wondering why people expect there to be a limit at all. Unless a game has somehow hard-coded all allowed screen resolutions, those usually come straight from the video driver. I've been using modern HD resolutions in games that came out when 1280x1024 was a high end monitor.:D

I've Never Been Sure About This Myself.....

How do you work out what is the most effective resolution for your computer and monitor?

Do you always stick with the default resolution?

Does this depend on the size and quality of monitor?

Does this depend on your graphic card?

:S:S:S:S

Assuming LCD screens, there is a defined resolution. Use that. Then make sure the card can drive that resolution. Sobig screens need good video cards. So do multi monitors.

I'm at 2560x1600. I would think they are supporting 4k... if not, I might have to seriously wonder about the current technical vision.

What resolution you can run at depends more on your graphics card more than anything.

Not just about how much Vram it has either it is a combernation of GPU grunt and the Vram for example the GT555m in my laptop has 3gb of vram but the GPU is pretty weak and would still struggle to run most games at decent settings @1080p so the extra Vram it has is pretty much pointless because the graphics card will run out of grunt way before it ever gets anywhere near the Vram limit.

Your GTX770 even if it is only just the 2gb version will max more or less every game out at1080p and still run most of the more demanding games close to maxed out at 1600p, there are a few games where you will have to turn a few settings down BF4 Crysis 3 Metro but adding extra Vram wont help much as you will be close to what the 770 can do you would need a more powerful card or to go SLI or crossfire to max these games out at that res.

I'm currently at 7680x1080 :)

It's not workable like this though, there is simply not enough room on my desk, and I am sick of turning my head - and so the 32" will be relegated back to xbox duty. I'll still have the three 23"'s though.

There is also a problem with switching fullscreen video, I only want one screen to display it (so I can keep working on another screen) and sometimes I get nasty random garbage displayed on the non-video screens that takes a hard reboot to fix.

So much for progress lol

Edit - a firmware update on the displayport/vga adapter seems to have fixed this - yay!

I would have to disagree with this statement. Your resolution needs to be what your monitor will support. Most modern video cards can easily produce resolutions above what the monitor can display. This will turn an expensive monitor into a door stop pretty quickly. Someone above said to set your resolution to your monitor's default and that's much safer...
