Engineers Ships Maybe that Mandalay's not quite the trailblazer the salesman would have you believe

During an exercise to rationalise the ships decaying in my hangars, I stumbled upon this little blast from the past.
How I miss that edge of the seat, seat of the pants, will they/won't they make it days of engineering.

Nowadays it's all health and safety gone nuts and the engineering RNGods have been sent to their rooms for a long hard think about what they did 😢

I just took my own physics-breaking Conda out of mothballs to upgrade it with the pre-eng'd SCO drive. Had to fly it out to Felicity and ship the modules to meet me there since you can't change any of the internals out while you're rocking those 4D stripped down engines. The ol' girl has to really think about whether it's actually going to go anywhere when you try to lift off the pad like that. 😂

Mandalay...17,000,000 credits base price (medium-sized ship)

Anaconda...146,000,000 credits base price (large-sized ship)

At that price, I can buy 8.5 Mandalays! (I bought two!)

For an extra 10Ly? Hmmm, that math doesn't math!

I want to see that build! Is that the new cardboard shield system? ;)

My main Mandalay is 85Ly unladen, with everything I need for exploration and exobiology, and that includes a couple shield boosters and a heat sink.

Ooh, the weight of that paintjob
My Mandy is purely designed for (very) rapid transit A to B.
Wouldn't risk taking it anywhere near a solid body, nor indeed resting a coffee cup on the barely there dashboard.
Hardly there Mandy

I like the Mandalay. I have three of them in my fleet.

My "main" Mandalay is called "Barry Mandilow" and is an armed multipurpose powerplay / mission runner. It carries 64t of cargo (96 if I ditch the scoop), has 1300 shields and 1400 armor and still jumps 46 ly. It's a nasty fighter and a joy to fly. If it wasn't for the Cobra V, this would be my daily driver.

My second one is called "The Core", and it's purpose it in its name - it's my core miner. As such, it's shields and armor are less impressive, and I don't take this one into open. The shields protect from even the worst bumps and boosts into asteroids, so they do their job. It carries 112t of cargo, just about my amount of attention span, and jumps 35 ly.

My third Mandalay is an exploration build. I don't really explore anymore, but I felt the need to have one, just in case. Previously, my main explorer was a Dolphin which I adored.

The explorer Mandalay is called "EV Jimmy Blenkinsop" after the greatest mountaineer that ever lived. It jumps just shy of 75 ly and brings close to 900 shields and 2900 armor. It can only carry 16 tons of corrosive cargo, but that's enough for the occasional limpet synth or other finds. (Yes, it's the same paint as Barry (chrome for the win), but the ship kit parts are different).

LOL, love the name "Barry Mandilow".

Yes, impressive indeed. I've thought about buying the wife a convertible Mandy, just for grocery shopping of course, when the weather is nice.

Care to share your build? I've always tried to get the Annie up there in LY range but I'm missing or overlooking something.

Not the exact build I'm afraid, but pretty representative.
The Mike Powell. Yes, you're right - it just cannot work on paper!
The final trick is to fit the 4D thrusters with Drive Distributors experimental, then (as a final act) flip this to Stripped Down.
After this the ship will no longer be outfitable due to mass issues (until you flip the experimental back).

Not much fun to fly to be sure, but interesting as an experiment in paper spaceships and getting there fast :ROFLMAO:
