Maybe We Should Just Head Home

GLUDGAA SX-Y C2-0 1
4874LY From Sol
Landed to effect repairs. Forgot flight assist was off and left the helm at about 1.5km to put the kettle on. Came back and my Conda was rolling in the sand with it's shields off, sitting at about 42%. By the time I rolled her over and landed again I was sitting at 34%.
I've repaired what I could but I'm debating whether to continue on to the Monkey Head or chicken out and head home. I've had a good run so far, as far as my frame of reference is concerned. A first discovery on a few water worlds and one ELW. On one hand I'm getting weary of: cut throttle, honk, detail scan the main star, open system map while scanner does its thing, look for neat stuff, [find water world, detail scan it, fly close and look at it for a bit, joyride on cool planet], carry on to next destination. I'm trying to enjoy it but I find myself nodding off.
On the other hand this is twice as far as I've every gone. It's really peaceful out here. The stars are few, I have a good view of the galaxy.
My power plant is still over 90% and I have FML reloads for days. I'm reluctant to land on any more planets though.

I can always come back out but there's so much galaxy, I don't know if I'm going to come back this way any time soon.

I'm surprised my ship held together. I guess all those kinetic upgrades made the difference. I can also thank the .3 Gs.

I'm torn. What do you guys think? Should I turn back or continue on?

Thanks. I don't get out much [alien] so I feel like this is good for me. I don't think exploration is in my blood but I can appreciate it in my own way and I'm not in a big hurry. What I'm more worried about is my ship popping and crackling all the time. I'll have to give it a go. Thanks!

It's exploration, seriously, it's nothing. 5k ly may as well be Sol in the grand scheme of things. I would get repairs.

Z...

Agree. I went back 5 Kylies just to change a paintjob and repair it. 5 Kylies is absolutely nothing. My suggestion is also go to the closest station repair and go back out again.

I'm currently 17k ly out from Sol and my hull is at 7%. I'm still exploring on my way home. 5k ly out isn't all that far, especially if you cannonball back to the bubble. I would say that if you dropped your hull that low in just 5,000ly, turn around and get repaired and then head back out.

Five klys is like pottering around in the shed at the bottom of the garden...could cover the distance in 3 hours or thereabouts. If it were several times the distance, I'd suggest either going on or divert to jaques place, but yer withing throwing distance of the bubble so just repair and head out again.

Everyone is telling that 5k is nothing, but this is very personal.
Reading carefully OP post I understood he is already weary of exploration.
In this state of mind, coming back will end his explorer career forever.

Since you got damaged by a mistake you can be carefull to not do anymore, and since your PP is good and you have lots of AMFU refills... KEEP GOING.

Yes that is the other side of the coin and I agree if that's the case.

Thanks for all your replies. I don't think I'll be coming back out for a while if I go home. I'm going to check out a couple star systems that piqued my interest and decide from there if I'm going to continue on.

I forgot to mention one thing: there's an engineer that's unlocked only if you went 5000+LY from your career start location (Palin). He is the only one that can upgrade thruster to lvl 4 and 5.
Since you say you never went this far, and you are 4.8k from Sol, you might want to push for a little more and don't need to repeat the task if you are weary of exploration.

Note that the enginner wants a distance of 5000LY from your career start location, not from Sol.

Personally I don't remeber where i started Elite, but if you go 5500 from Sol you can be dead sure you will be 5000+ from career starting location.

Thanks. It's settled then. I'm heading south another 1000LY at least. I just went straight "down" about 800LY into the top of the Perseus Arm to check out a blue supergiant. Ship seems to be fine. No more crackling or smoke.

It's a shame that there's no way to repair hull, at least somewhat, while out in the field.

Yes. Either with SRV (although that then limits it to Horizons and above) or via some special repair limpets that the Repair Rats would carry out to you.

Also the power plant....maybe using your own afmu but powered by external tether

I think you should head back to bubble, if you are getting tired of it (well, might as well get Palin if you are that far out, but after the status screen says 5001 ly from start...). Damaged or not, it makes no difference.

If you don't feel like continuing, go back to the Bubble and do other things. And if you ever get tired of those other things and want to have in-game holiday again, you can just dust up the fuel scoop and A-rated FSD from storage and zoom out few 1000 ly's. No need to ruin exploration for you just because some ppl like it more than you, no need to push for goals you don't really want. Treat it as a vacation and return when it starts to feel like work. That way you feel good doing it again and again.

Just my opinion.

I have to ask and offer a little advice, OP. Why did you land to do repairs? If it was for immersion or RP or something, cool. If you thought you had to, next time just exit SC...come to stop and do repairs in space...way less dangerous and gets you on your way quicker.
