Meanwhile, EA will launch a Star Wars space game supporting VR

Star Wars Squadron, to be announced tomorrow will have VR support:

I know it's early to have opinions about it and it's EA and it will not be a sim etc etc.

I just find it weird that while we have finally EA announcing something about VR in space, while FD is dropping it... 2020 weirdness at its peak.

They are dropping it for the next expansion.

the fact that they will keep it for legacy versions means that they keep support what they did, without further new developments, which is what makes lot of people here upset.

ah, and before you say something about “maybe they will add VR later” simply confirms that they are not developing it now and maybe they will develop it later.

As RELSPI said elsethread (half jokingly)... Getting a VR FPS game to use the same controls as it's vehicle counterpart will be tough.
What we have now is fine, and FD could make a FPS/VR game, but think about controls. You can't (easily) walk around using a HOTAS! Using a controller might be easier, but we all know how married FD/ED is to the X52. Keyboard and mouse is the obvious way to go, but that means having a keyboard convenient with the other.

I'm going to be optimistic and assume the Not At Launch to indicate that they are still trying to work out how to do it without breaking the spaceships game.

Not doing it initially in the next expansion is a long way from dropping it.
This is the core of the misunderstanding.
Yes it may not be a good sign in regards to the prospects of having VR in Odessy but it also isn't a "no"
If I had a dime for each time I've heard devs promise something that never became reality (vapor), I'd be very rich. In the meantime GT7 for PS5 will also include support for PSVR2. Fdev wants to turn ED into a MMO FPS, which it will never be. Imagine if they had gone the other way, and only supported VR and HOTAS. Now that would have been great for me, but it would probably have caused a minor debate as well.

That’s cool news - I was not happy that the Battlefront2 VR XWing mission never came to PC and now it looks like we’re getting a full game.

Along with the recent NMS patch, this has helped ameliorate my current feelings towards EDO VR loss (or just-not-getting if you’re that way inclined).

Absolutely and I have no doubt your concerns have good foundation
Right now though the only thing we know is that it won't be in Odessy at launch, no more, no less
As much as I disagree with Fdev's decision, I've had an awesome experience for my money in ED, and I will continue to play the game until Odd arrives, which, also considering history, might take a while. However, I won't spend one of the dimes I don't have on anything non VR in the future. Then I'd rather not play CG at all, but maybe I'm just not that much of a gamer.

It's a business decision, I'm sure there are a pile of reasons why they made it. They would have known the disappointment in the community so what ever the reason it must have been compelling.
I pretty much only play Elite, I was spoiled all those years ago and other games just don't cut it.
I'm happy to take whatever FDev give me, in whatever form it might be.

It's trivial to reach over and pick up a gamepad...

I’m not sure why the whole controller thing is such an issue for VR, ED supports multiple controller input. I’ve been using an X52 for flight and a gamepad for SRV from the start, when I got VR I had no issue swapping between them so I would see no issue using a gamepad for FPS mode

So let's see what EA seems to be doing, just for the sake of explaining what I would have gladly accepted from ED.

You want to play on foot, FPS ? Buy a game in 2D and do it. Star Wars Battlefront for EA.

You want to fly a spaceship ? Buy a game supporting VR and do it, and it should be Star Wars Squadron.

Same universe, different games supporting different play stiles and needs.

I know it's just me, but I love ED because of flying ships. I never felt the need for an FPS. I have other games for when I want to do FPS. Other space sim companies tried this and failed (CCP with the EVE FPS that has been canceled after few months).

So I hate the fact that I will not be able to experience what I love the most of ED and what I was dreaming about (VR flying and landing in atmospheric world) because Frontier decided to give priority to features that I never wanted in a game like ED, which prevent supporting my dreams.

I would have preferred an approach like the one EA is doing.

I know there are tons of chances EA will screw up something anyway.

But I find it ironic that after all the hate etc, I am getting what I want from EA and not from FD.

And of course it is just me and my opinion, but I am a lifetime backer and I loved ED also because it was my first ever game of when I was young that I was able to experience in VR, and it has been amazing, and I am sad it will not end up doing what I could do in FFE (so flying and landing on atmospheric world in VR).

You want to fly a spaceship BUT JUST OVER SOME WORLDS AND NOT OTHERS while more functionalities, if added, will happen just through expansions that will not support VR ? Keep Elite Dangerous Horizons.

It seems you forget about flying over/into atmospheric worlds or gas giants, and the possibilities this could add to gameplay... maybe you don’t care, and it's fine, just consider that the people complaining here is people that cares about those features.

You should be in a circus, with a crystal ball

Not sure what you mean, anyway I don’t think our discussion here will change the future developments of EA and FD.

You are happy about Odissey and I am not: have a nice Sunday and enjoy !
