Newcomer / Intro Mechanics of ending up on a penal ship

Hi

I accidentally shot a security ship in a RES, got a 300 CR fine. OK fair enough. I docked at the in-system station owned by that faction, and paid my fine. I was then transferred to a penal ship 160LY away.

Is there a way to avoid this? Should i have paid my fine in a Interstellar Factors station, is that even possible?

Thanks!

You didn't get a 300 fine - you got a bounty. watch the text next time - it said 'Hand yourself in', not 'Pay fine'.

Yes, use an IF elsewhere.

This is one of the things about Elite Dangerous.

You really have to read messages, warnings and instructions carefully not just skim them.

As mentioned I do believe you can also travel to any Interstellar station and pay fines and bounties without worries, I think. Please correct this if I'm wrong..

"Interstellar Factor", a contact on stations in low security systems. Not entirely without worries - people have reported that if they're paying at a station that also houses the bounty issuing faction they also ended up in jail. Worked for me so far, though - you just have to look exactly at what and where you're paying...
