Meet the Team - Dan Davies

If you could ask the community one question, what would it be?

For those who play on control pad, what do you have mapped to left and right on the right analogue stick?

Answer in the thread below!

Ed

Played with a controller from very early on and have little problem in dealing with players who use a HOTAS.. To answer your question Dan, its Yaw ;) With Throttle mapped to up and down.

Interesting to hear you play SC2.. great game but I could never manage an APM of 500 :/ hehe

When I'm playing with a 360 pad the right stick controls lateral and vertical thrust, and the left stick controls pitch and roll. Pressing and holding the left stick activates yaw on the same stick. :)

Nice interview, thanks.

I use an old PS3 controller with tilt for headlook. I have pitch and roll on the left stick (yaw into roll set very low). On the right stick I have thrust up/down/left/right. I have a button for toggling roll and yaw, but I almost never use it. I use left/right firing buttons for yaw in landing mode.

Pressing both buttons for throttle up and throttle down simultaneously sets speed to 0. That works well.

Tell the community a fun fact about yourself

I do like to maintain some hobbies that don’t involve looking at a screen and I’ve recently got back into model making. Mike Evans and I recently imported a pair of the new 1/72 Bandai X-Wings and painted them up, his looks a lot better!

Start lobbying with Frontier for a range resin/metal minis for Elite. Do it! I'm imagining a dueling pair of Cobras on my desk and I'm all sorts of giggly about it.

What are you 12? :D:D:D jk :) nice too meet you!

Good for you being in game design at your early age.

If you could have had a hand in any game development of the past, which game would it have been?

Left stick: X = Yaw, Y = Pitch
Right stick: X = Roll, Y = Vertical Thrusters
Thankfully my gamepad has a built-in throttle :)

Left stick: X = Roll, Y = Pitch.
Right stick: X = Yaw, Y = Vertical thrusters.

The yaw control on right stick is my only adjustment from the well-known Crab setup for X360 gamepads.

Nice to meet you Dan :D I have to say I myself am quite competitive at heart as well. Sub out SC2 for CS:GO though. With all this competitiveness, does that mean we will have a true skill ranking in CQC much like ranked matches in LoL or SC2? I feel like for games to have decent longevity in todays competitive front, the skill based progression in a separate MM queue where you gain rating and can also lose it becomes important to have. Myself and a lot of my friends would love to see this in CQC.

Thanks Dan, what a great job you've done.

yaw
:)

I liked the Predator and Prey scenario back in the Alpha days. It was one that made you think a bit. And real hot.

No left analogue stick, sorry, I'm a HOTAS (ab)user. I do use a mouse on the left, though, which is very convenient in the Galaxy Map and other menus.

Keep up the good work!

:D S

Dan, I am pretty happy with the way ED turned out. It really plays like a modern version of Elite. Much more hit than miss, so kudos to the team.

One suggestion, since CQC seems to be geared towards e-Sports: Check in with the EliteRacers crowd and see if you can help them with some easy additions (maybe something they can use for courses in the open universe) - I think what those guys do is brilliant and should be supported, and it gets you a racing subgame in Elite in addition to arena combat.

I've been playing for several months and always played with a controller. The right analog stick left and right are used for yaw axis. This is the default controller setting since I've started.

For me:

Left Stick: Up / Down - Throttle Axis (used for quicker throttle up/down into Frame shift or full stop exiting hyperspace - I keep Joy 5 & 6 mapped throttle also)
Left Stick: Left / Right - Yaw Axis
Right Stick : Up / Down - Pitch Axis
Right Stick : Left / Right - Roll Axis
Left Stick click: Target Panel
Right Stick click: Systems Panel
