Meet the Team - Gregg Chamberlain

I was re-enacting the Adama manoeuvre from BSG and my Corvette was above a settlement I was testing
You are my new favorite person. You have no idea how much I've been wanting to try doing that exact thing once the beta drops. :D

Also, having spent more than my share of time as a tester, and now working the front lines as a senior engineer, I can appreciate just how daunting the job of writing test cases and tracking down repros must be for a system of this complexity. The sheer number of potential code paths alone must be insane, and I can only assume your job requires writing an absolutely stupid amount of scripts and automated tests.

Favourite system: T Tauri, the heart of the Hind Nebula. It's unique amongst ED nebulae, and very pretty in a subtle way - like being inside a hollow apricot with a couple of dark blue ringed gas giants. Take a peek sometime ;)

Zaonce. Moved there from Eravate to begin my professional pewpew career. :D And as stated above, the scenery is amazing when blowing up pirates to the background of a volcanic planet just a few light seconds from the local star.

Oh btw I really love the Meet the team interviews. Are they archived somewhere? Would love to read a few older ones that I liked. :)

Well I know I can search for the interviews... But it would've been more convenient to actually have a forum section dedicated to these articles. :)

I have my biscuits and drink, ready to start a new day!

You should try Swedish Ballerina cookies. Oh and be sure to try putting 2 or 3 After Eight in your coffee. ;) Together with the Ballerina cookies you're in heaven lol.

Gregg, how much automated feature testing are you able to do? You mentioned that you created the test cases, are these scripts for the QA team to manually follow, or are you able to add test cases for fixed bugs to an automated test suite to check for regressions? Since we automated our acceptance testing, our level of confidence in releases increased.
All the test cases are written based on the feature in question. So if a new ship comes through a new test case written on it. It could take basic elements from previous tests but also have new additions added based on its role or ability. Regarding automation we do only a minimal amount of this but it would cover large aspects such as 'can you hyperspace to every system in the game'. We could never do that in real time.

Wstephenson - good to see another software tester! :) Acceptance testing is rarely fully automated. Businesses tend to have a core-regression pack which they'll automate. Then manual testing is planned around the risk area's in scope. When the manual change and automated regression phases pass acceptance testing and are signed off for release, that's usually the point where additional tests would be added to the core pack for any projects thereafter.

Say for instance, if risk based testing was written to the automation suite, by using agile methodology there could be changes to the code which would mean re-writing the automation scripts, then as always to regression test after the risk aspects are approved. Otherwise also, regression would be running the same tests multiple times within the sprint cycle.

Oh.... :( you're one of them!

Gregg - What has personally been the most frustrating aspect of ED to get right so far?

I would not say anything has frustrated me. But as I said in my interview the size of the game is daunting given its scope.

Gregg! Trading is quite nice - but I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I kinda sorta lust for more trading tools and functionality. Things like being able to view a graph of demand/supply and price developments on individual goods, proper remote querying of markets, etc...

There's a ton of thoughts on improving trading here on the forums and I do hope that you guys are not "happy" with the current state of affairs - i.e. that you add more depth AND more eyecandy to it :)

That is something for the design team to answer . ;)

And they keep refusing to answer. They have added more range options for the transport missions, what is now missing is more scale for larger amounts. There are lots of people who enjoy flying around a big hauler, but not playing the buy/sell market.

I've always had a soft spot for Dahan, because the station is haunted. Haven't dared go there since Prem Beta.

Very interesting read. Hello from a fellow Aussie (well a dual-citizenship pom-in-Oz (Perth)).

My favourite system: Phekda........ to quote from a post I saw on on these forums a while ago: "why the Phekda ya want to go Phekda" ?
It's Phekda simply because I done got me a permit. Also there-in lies Nirvana (as mentioned previously in this thread), a terraformed gem & one of the best bands in the Sol system way back in the 1990s.
