Newcomer / Intro Meeting a contact in deep space?

Ok so I got a mission out of the blue on my comms panel to move some strategic data. So I agreed to it, and was told to meet my contact in the Ross 47 system - no base was specified so I fugured he'd contact me on my arrival. I turned up there, and went to the nav beacon because I thought that might be the sort of place where he might want to meet.

But when I had sat there for several minutes and scanned quite afew ships looking for him, I noticed a message on my comms panel where the guy had contacted me and invited me to follow his wake. That was ten minutes before I saw the message, so I don't know where his wake is and therefore where *he* is! And how do you follow a wake? Do I have to have a wake scanner, or is it just a question of following his contrails?

This is all very confusing. I have abandoned the mission but I would still like to know what I should have done!

If you'd just supercruised around the system looking out for his message you could then just target his wake when he drops out of supercruise. Fly towards it and drop out once within 1000km (I don't think you get a count down timer so you have to do it by feel).

Rather than abandoning you probably could have just returned to supercruise, or maybe reenter the system or relog and he'd reappear.
