True story: A guy I used to work with, who had a degree in engineering, used to go on about how it'd be possible to solve the world's energy problems by building a pipe up into space and then generating power from turbines driven by the vacuum.
Actually, on a related note, there's a fairly famous youtuber (with a squirrel as an avatar) who's currently advocating a similar idea, whereby pipelines laid across the Earth's surface would harness the differential pressure beteen different weather systems to drive turbines.
This is especially ironic since he spends a fair amount of his time debunking bad science.
Unless
he's suggesting this ironically.
