Mercenary Edition (possibly stupid questions, sorry)

Hi all,
I've been playing since beta (loving it for the most part). Whilst checking my account dashbord, I noticed that it says the Mercenary Edition is now available to download, so here comes the (possibly) stupid questions....
Do I have to download and install this version?
The update from gamma through to now (1.03), seems to be working fine, but are all the mercenary extras activated in this?
Also, if I do install this new version, do I lose the progress I've made up until now (ie Progress through gamma etc)?

Mercenary Edition, I believe, is simply just the type of account you have. Downloading the ME client won't make a difference as far as I'm aware.
