Merchandise question

I know Frontier has closed their merch store and apparently will not be reopening it, but I've been looking on auction sites etc for a elite pin badge for years. I stumbled upon this site https://onestopbadges.co.uk/products/badges/ that shows the elite pins as example in their products. I imagine they were the original makers. Would it be a huge copyright mess to try to get some made?

Yes If i wanted to sell them. But I don't want to sell them.
Do you also ask other people for permission to sneeze? If you start producing pins on a large scale and Frontier feel they miss out on earning $$$'s it might become an issue.

In more general terms: Do you personally have any copyrights or trademarks? Have you ever signed any "social contract" where you agreed not to do anything others might think is bad (for them)? Do you own any IP? You can't just put a claim on something (like a combination of words or a name) unless you're a company. Copyrights are made to protect companies from companies, not to protect you. Then ask yourself, why/if you should really care, on an ethical level.

I'm not telling you to break their law. That would probably be against the forum rules. I'm just encouraging you to start philosophizing a little bit. Good luck!

Let's imagine we're talking about Star Wars and not ED. Would we still be asking the same questions?

Whether Frontier believe its worth their time to enforce anything is of course is another matter and entirely up to them.

For me, yes, though YMMV.

Personally, whether or not someone will pursue or whether enforcement is even viable isn't a concern... rather, if I'm breaking a rule/law/whatever, I'd rather do so in full knowledge that I am.

From the point of view of someone trying to get something made, I agree. I'm just looking at it from the other side that just because a company were to turn a blind eye to it or it not being worth it financially for them to pursue (and I'm sure there's examples of this) that this doesn't mean what you'd be doing is legitimate.

Hence my Star Wars comment. No-one would ever ask this if it was something Disney owned because we know the score there. You wouldn't ask. Same rules do apply with FDev's IP.

Ah, fair enough, i misread the meaning in your last comment :)

Edit: Btw @OP, this relates to media use, and not for profit at that.

I link it less for any use, and more to maybe offer more lines of enquiry.
