Meteors would be nice?

Every planet in ED has hundreds, if not thousands, of craters, but it occurred to me that I have not seen a single meteor.

Thought it would be a nice touch to see the odd meteor hit a planet (particularly if you are on the planet surface at the time) - the visual and sound effects could be awesome. Obviously, not feasible for all planets, but randomly sprinkled throughout the galaxy would be cool.

What do fellow Cmdr's think?

P.S. Also put this forward in the suggestion thread for the dev's to consider:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/331706-Meteors-would-be-nice?p=5195122#post5195122

P.P.S Don't confuse meteors with meteorites. A meteor is the object in space, whereas a meteorite is the object from space after it hits the surface. There is plenty of evidence of meteorites in the game, just no meteors. :)

NOTE TO DEVS: The mod moved this thread from Dangerous discussion so now there are two threads here. The actual "suggestion" thread is as per the link above.

How often are you expecting meteors to hit a planet?

Probably shouldn't be all that rare, honestly. Noticing them on worlds without atmospheres would probably be a little more difficult in general though. I've seen a few pretty spectacular shooting star fireballs firsthand, beyond just the normal streaks you might see in a typical meteor shower.

+1, OP. More of a living galaxy would be nice to see.

No idea, but an uncommon sight. May be some planets will be more susceptible than others, so players could visit in the hope that they will get a glimpse. If FD liked the idea, it would be up to the dev's as to how frequent the event is.

I could have sworn that I've collected materials from various types of meteorite in game. I'd even go as far as saying that they are pretty common on most planets. As we are currently limited to planets without any atmosphere and the vast majority of objects are small, they'd practically have to almost hit you for you to notice them.

Meteors i.e. in space. Maybe, but I've seen some big craters out there. :)

Most meteorites i find are in the middle of a crater. Still rare to come across though. Can imagine that the more craters a planet has, the higher the chance of finding meteorites. Dont hold me to that though...

A meteor that actually hits is probably one thousand to one against. Actually being close enough to see it on an airless planet considering there's no air to make it burn on re-entry and become visible, probably close to a billion to one against.

I can see it now, player roving around near his ship in the SRV. "Oooh a meteor, that looks cool. Looks pretty close, wonder where its going to hit, I might get to see it make a new crater... NOOOOOOOOOO, MY SHIP!"

According to very old dev posts, comets are in the developer builds, but there is no gameplay around them (yet) and maybe they haven't had much artist attention.

There is so much potential in ED. Time will tell.

But seeing meteors on planets with atmosphere is a detail that would be at the bottom of my list of wanted features.
