microphone on Vive appears to be muted

SOLVED. microphone on Vive appears to be muted

Any idea how to correct this? Voice attack shows the mic as no signal/ muted.
when I go to Windows 10 control panel, then sound, then the recording tab, I can see that I have the correct option as default, but when I speak the green bars only show one bar, unless I shout loudly. Speech recognition training works with the Vive, but again my voice is very faint. I have tried holding the hmd mic in front of my mouth, with the same results.

Random guess. Have you got push to talk enabled in the RD settings?
Wondering if it's on mute and the PC mic is picking you up when you shout.

Sorry what do you mean by RD settings? In the game control settings? In which case no, I checked that, it is not on push to talk.

Uncheck "AGC" in the properties panel of the mic in recording devices, windows audio. It seems that the Automatic Gain Control is iffy and can drop things to to the point where the mic is unusable in-game. One person on reddit also hacked on a pop-filter that improved the audio input a great deal, just tape or glue a small piece of fabric over the mic hole, and that will help a great deal with sound quality.

thanks, I tried all your suggestions, but no change.
something else though, when using the Vive, voice attack often does not recognise what I say, eg. Request docking voice attack comes up with dance docking! Etc. I have used Windows speech training, and read the script several times, but VA still does not recognise what I say 80% of the time.

Solved it. In speech training, under the advanced tab, I had "run speech recognition at start up" turned off. Turned it on, and all is now fine.
