Microsoft announced vr sets of different manufactures are coming with a start price of $300,00 in 2017

Are you talking about the tablet/laptops, or the VR headsets? I'm not sure why the headsets wouldn't be good for gaming. We don't know any details yet.
Has already been mentioned that they are basically what the Oculus Santa Cruz is... so they are basically tapping into a different eco system of software... similar to Gear VR just that you don't use a phone as screen...
its entry level VR to get the masses but its nowhere what Rift and Vive do... you want to play games made for VR you have two options Vive or Rift... anything else is mediocre at best just try to make Gear VR work with Elite
its a pain in the     and the result has nothing to do with what you experience ein the rift or vive...

Can you point me to a link stating it's Gear VR type fidelity? Santa Cruz is stand-alone. These things are tethered to computers, and they mention they're higher fidelity than >$500 HMDs.

Well dang it, I was actually all set to pull the trigger on a Rift. Now I'm not sure if these really are an upgrade in tech as Microsoft claims that will be out in a few months, or just low budget stuff that will be inferior to whats already out there but at a better price point.

Although I have to say, I did demo a PSVR at Best Buy the other day. For being low spec, it was an incredibly comfortable headset and I noticed no SDE or other undesirable 'side effects' common with the Rift.

Do what I did. Buy a second hand unit with about 15 hours of use, and save 50%. Chances are, when you decide to "upgrade", you'll lose about another 10%, and that's about it.

Sounds like a good plan but where the heck are you finding Rifts for 50% off?

I'm sure they'll be $300 worth of "good for gaming". Microsoft isn't doing anything special here, they're just trying to to get left behind like they did with mobile.

I bought mine on an Overlcocking Forum (Australian based) I also bought my 6600K, Asus Maximus Gene VIII, Corsair Air 240 case, all at or below haf retail (The Gene and 6600K cost me less then a brand new gene). It takes time, but if you are willing to search through for sale ads in the more trusted forums, you'll succeed eventually. Took me about a month to snap up the Oculus form when I started looking.

I myself am about to sell my Asus Ranger VII, and 4690K. The loss will be minimal in terms of what I paid for it, compared to new. Picking things up personally also mean I can make sure they work before handing over the folding stuff.
