Hardware & Technical Microsoft will oblige the automatic updates in Windows 10

What do you think of this obligation to undergo the Windows Updates (Without ability to disable and choose them manually) ? This obligation will make you change your mind, and you will not install Windows 10 on your PC ?

I think that everyone having the guaranteed latest updates for their OS is a very good thing - especially for home users. The problem with that is, it is not guaranteed that the latest updates won't break installs. It's going to be interesting.

You may be interested in the page I was reading today; http://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyl...soft-backtracks-on-windows-10-forced-updates/

Not sure how someone with a 'bricked' PC would use the tool though!

Further, (I do not have a link at hand for this) I was reading how MS has also backed down by allowing users to go in to a windows updates 'settings' page and turn off selected updates. I'm unsure at present if this was just a 'Pro' facility or would be included with 'Home' though.

The commercial opportunities for who-ever can come up with a wrokable alternitive OS to M$ are wide open.

Someone stands to potentially make billions.

Having actually tested it and used it I can say I will not be upgrading any time soon and when Vista (which I reinstalled over 10) dies in 2017 I will go Linux, before you all try to burn me at the exhaust outlet of the nearest Cobra Mk III I will explain.

On testing I came to the conclusion that the drivers that come with Windows 10 were substandard to the ones I located and installed myself (after disabling driver signing more on that later), the drivers that came with windows allowed basic browsing and GUI stuff nothing graphics related at all. I located drivers that worked and used the GPU 100% perfectly even to playing games on it and tried to install, failed due to driver signing so I done the safe mode disable route and installed them and restarted. Driver signing turns back on after each restart so disables your drivers if they are not M$ certified.

I thought ok so I disabled driver signing and reinstalled the drivers and restarted, perfect the system runs amazing could do everything I wanted. Even put in a load of feedback reports to Microsoft and sending them the drivers to the representative so it could be included in Windows 10 release DVD was told thanks for the submission... Got latest version and its back to the same thing this time however I done the same thing BUT windows update reinstalled the Microsoft Win10 drivers and killed windows 10 with it EXC_BAD_POOL error...restart...EXC_BAD_POOl error... you get the idea even in safe mode.

So to put it this way if they cant support a GPU properly how the hell can I be sure their drivers will work 100% when I know they only allow basic browsing. Before everyone thinks im running some obscure GPU its a Intel Mobile 4 express GPU and yes Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 all have 100% working drivers for it FROM MICROSOFT its just they forgot to put the same driver in for Win10.

So yes Linux will be on here in May 2017 when Vista x64 dies.

If you have the pro version rather than the home version, you can control updates as per usual. Its only the home edition that they are forcing updates.
I should clarify that that excludes security patches they are mandatory unfortunately

...BUT windows update reinstalled the Microsoft Win10 drivers...

Windows-Pause
Advanced System Settings
Hardware
Device Installation Settings
"No, let me choose what to do"
"never install driver software from Windows Update".

Done. :)

Well I was on the list to upgrade, but I am having second thoughts. When I heard they were updating Nvidia drivers as a security patch, which you cannot stop in windows 10, this worries me immensely as I have had problems with the Nvid Drivers and my 4K SLI setup regularly. I have been sticking with drivers that I know work and I want to be the one to decide whether or not to upgrade them.

jabokai: already done and amazingly windows update still installed the drivers and put the setting back the way they were this was using Win10 Pro revision 10130 IIRC.

Its not something I am comfortable with in general. I like to have control of my own computer and when these things are taken out our hands it starts to feel a little something from iRobot. The situation is much better if you have the pro or enterprise version.

This doesn't inspire confidence but if you want to force your update today then check this out

I had the same idea with my GPU but after windows forcing the issue it promptly died with the obligatory :( and EXC_BAD_POOL over and over again. If Microsoft cant get graphics drivers right how can Win10 be trusted with other drivers to me it still feels like it needs at least another year of testing.

I have the pro version. But I'll wait a few months before installing. That things are clearer

Which Linux are you think of?

I've looked at a few and they each seem to come with their own set of problems.

I would jump to Linux in a flash if I could find one that actually worked.

Well it certainly doesn't win me over, but to be honest there are a whole load of security related and privacy issues that means i'm not likely to upgrade to 10:

http://www.techrepublic.com/article...-concerns-and-questions/?s_cid=e064&ttag=e064

I've seen this shift coming since windows 8 and then the whole fiasco of the original Xbox One plan to include the camera that spies on your living room (which they had to change!), so i've already been in the 'wait and see' camp from the outset. In that time it actually promted me to look at Linux (Mint) which i've been running with no issues on the laptop i'm using now. So yeah it might be the new 'spying' nature of MS could push me away from MS for good?

I'm keeping windows 7 for now (dual booting with Linux Mint) and will see how these security concers are addressed by MS. 10 might be free which is awesome, but maybe there is a reason for that, a dark sinsiter spying reasons? ;)

Just installed a copy of W10 on a spare drive using this utility: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_10.html

The installation takes a while. Just let it happen. I haven't entered any licience key, so I'm on eval period.

In use, it's OK. There's a big store icon in the middle, which indicates what we can expect from now on. Did some browsing which went not too badly. Only able to use BING.

My W7 OS is now offering me an update to W10. Sadly, this was refused because apparently, my 2.4 Ghz CPU isn't good enough.

C'est la vie
