A bit rude considering both 7 and 8.1 are getting extended support updates until 2020 (win 7) and 2023 (win 8.1).

Both are past their shelf-life. Extended support is a phase for corporate customers to migrate to the next supported version.

In truth i always found the official support forum very hit and miss and would point people to these forums instead:

Yeah, that's true, the official channels are very rarely helpful. For nontrivial issues you find a lot of stupid and downright harmful advice in other channels though once things go beyond the usual dance of "sfc /scannow" and "dism" runs, so unless you know what you're doing you're pretty much screwed anyway.
