Military Compartments? Mostly useless?

Hello Commanders.

I recently bought a type 10 for use as an armored transport. I was disappointed to find that it has two class 5 military compartments.

I'm trying to understand what the reasoning is to restrict placement of optional modules into certain ships?

I can install module/hull armor protection into any open optional internal compartment on any ship if desired. Why are military compartments restricted then? Why can't I put a shield generator in them?

I'd gladly pay to convert them to regular internal slots...

I think partly to give military ships a real combat advantage, and also to restrict them so they don't replace genuine multi-role ships.
Don't think of them as wasted cargo space, think of them as genuine combat bonuses.
It's similar to the restricted passenger slots on the liners - although that restriction was lifted recently. Mostly because the passenger mechanic wasn't as well-fleshed out as it could have been, making them more of a hindrance than a bonus. Luxury passengers just weren't worth it.

I found that out after the fact unfortunately. I still think they're not necessary however, unless you are outfitting a pure combat ship.

I'm running with engineered armor anyway so I'd love to use that extra space for cargo (or at least a shield generator lol). Oh well.

Dont count on that engineered armor. Type-10 is a big target with weak shields and basically no evasion whatsoever
And murderboats come with military stuff in almost all compartments not only in the military ones (which is another beef of mine with the ship design in ED)

True, but then there's that grind lol. I'm only running cargo right now to help a buddy replenish his FC with tritium. It was part of a deal for him to come out to Colonia to pick me up.

True that. But it does give me an opportunity to try out the Type 10 anyway. Like I said above, it's mainly to help a buddy out then I'm selling it. I'm not big on cargo running.

IMHO, all these military compartments have been hugely obsoleted by engineering, but I guess they still have their purposes for very specific combat situations or if you play the base game (no engineers).

I don't use military-specific modules anymore, except for thargoid hunting and I find it more efficient to engineer your shield and shield boosters than use the reinforcement packages or shield cell bank.

T9 is perfect for that, I have a dedicated T9 in my carrier with no shield generator, only to mine (outside the bubble) 512T cargo with 14 collectors... Does the job quite fast...

So why don't you put a couple of Guardian shield boosters in there? Easy 430 additional MJ of shield strength.

IMO all ships should have dedicated Opt. Module slots for their intended use.
Though, it would be nice to perhaps, engineer them for other means.

Agreed, but... grind, grind, grind... expensive, and even worse maneuverability than a T9

As in it has none. In fact it has so much drift, it should feature in a Fast & Furious movie. Mine is currently used as a cargo bus buying Trit from a station and dumping it on my FC, and for running the Powerplay vouchers to finish getting all the toys.
