Military slots

just wondering why a fighter bay isn't considered an item for use in a "military slot"?

I believe the answer lies in that only a few [large] ships (Fed. Corvette, 'Conda, Keelback and few more I can't recall atm) are able to fit fighter bays while military slots are common to all combat specialized ships. A Vulture has a military slot but not big enough to fit a fighter bay.

This would require a ship to have a military slot big enough for a fighter bay (size 5) and ACTUALLY have the option to use a fighter bay. There are only 4 such ships in the game: the Big 3, and the Type 10 (the Big 4 maybe?).

All of these ships have 2 additional seats for multi-crew, and can accommodate size 6/7 fighter bays. The only real reason to use a size 5 fighter bay over a size 6 or size 7 is because you do not have a size 6/7 slot to put it in (Only really applies to the Keelback). In every other case, a size 6/7 fighter bay would be better since it allows you continually launch new fighters or have more than crew member in a fighter at the same time, while also giving you more rebuilds for longevity in combat.

In short, there really isn't a reason to put a fighter bay in a military slot.

Don't buy into this nonsense, the original arguments against wide distribution was the dreaded "game balance".

As to fighter bays fitting into ship designs, it is the same sort of haphazardly applied philosophy so common in the game. Volume doesn't control ship design, the designer's envisioning of the ship and the model does.
