Milky Way may be much larger than previously estimated

Ooohh it's all gone chocolatey in here...

I was going to type something funny and witty but it escaped me at the moment of typing. :(

On topic however, I that this has the potential to be bigger than the milky way unless you count for downsizing .....

Nuts, whole hazelnuts...

The Milky Way galaxy is at least 50 percent larger than is commonly estimated, according to new findings that reveal that the galactic disk is contoured into several concentric ripples. The research, conducted by an international team led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Professor Heidi Jo Newberg, revisits astronomical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey which, in 2002, established the presence of a bulging ring of stars beyond the known plane of the Milky Way.

Good news for explorers, perhaps :)

Stunning through isn't it how large the galaxy is, even at the scale implemented in the game.

Another interesting link:

And hey ho, the nebula are in the game too.

careful ;-)

the article suggests, that the density of stars is LOWER than thought. the article says not, that there is more "content" available, but that the estimated number of stars (100 billion) is spread further out.
so we would need to increase jump ranges of ships then ;-)

Oh, no! It's even larger now? And there are billions and billions of other galaxies? I feel so insignificant, does anyone need my liver?

What I don't get, is that Hubble can get clear, highly detailed shots of a nebula thousands of light years away, yet were sending a probe to take a pic of Pluto that's in our own system... Don't figure

Look at that size of the area in that deep field pic compared to the moon

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/science/xdf.html

Pluto wouldn't even be visible, hubble is good but not that good, It wouldn't be able to resolve footprints on the moon either BTW

right.......many ppl do not get the sizes of objects in space right......
for example andromeda is more than 3 times larger than the moon in the sky....

or some nebula in comparison
