Mind-controlling your ship

Just thought of this whilst reading another thread:

With the possibility to translate electroencephalographic mu wave desynchronisation patterns into computer inputs and BCI devices becoming commercially available for consumers, has anyone thought about acquiring something like that and mind controlling their ship?

Depending on personal training, that might be a mindblowing experience, especially in VR.

Explanation of the principle here:

Tbh, I doubt they're accurate enough, but I'm considering it (I don't expect to do dogfights that way - just consider using it when floating around the galaxy to relax)...

Did anyone preorder e.g. an emotiv headset? Any hands on experiences?

Everyone that I know that has one (emotiv) all pretty much has said they are useless for complex tasks.. and require extensive focus for simple commands. Sounds like too much work for a game.

I need this...to mind control the wife so she understands I need to spend more time flying around in space with a strange mask strapped to my head.

If if that sounds sexist...don't worry! I will buy her one too ...so she can tell me when dinner is ready.

Actually, that is not as weird as it sounds: http://www.cnet.com/news/scientist-controls-colleagues-hand-in-first-human-brain-to-brain-interface/

Still considering it - I know it wont work, but the geek in me is excited by the idea - and if it just means smashing my ship into a station wall by a thought.

Does anyone know the phrase :

"when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you."

Funny thing is, you get already mind controlled by the sole fact that you try to mind control. Because if you thought something unnecessary or improper, you would loose control.

Nietzsche, thus spoke Zarathustra (and I didn't even have to look that up - read it a couple of times). Good point, but except for the fact that anything that draws our attention influences our mind to a certain extent due to the mere fact that it is subject to our thought, it is still ourselves controlling our minds when trying to focus our thoughts to perform an action in a BCI (the extent of us controlling our minds is highly debatable and imho way overrated, but that would lead too far OT).

Anyway - I'm still interested as I play around with memory techniques (mainly the method of loci) and this could be a nice device to train thought focusing.

Just flying out to a beautiful location and trying to focus on an action, with all the visual and acoustic feedback provided by the game may be a rewarding experience.
But yeah, after watching some more footage about the emotiv, doing the above is probably the best you can achieve with it. 700 $ for just that is probably a bit pricey, but I'm still considering it.

Do you know if ED are supporting these in game? - seems a shame to spend so much money but find it isnt supported.

It comes with a software bundle that lets you assign actions like key presses to certain thoughts, so yes, it should be usable. Generally speaking, I have no worries about getting it to work - using Vjoy, I haven't had any problems getting any device to work in games as long as it connects to a computer.

However, I have yet to find out of it allows for modeling of analogue axes. There is an intensity axis in their software but I don't know if the intensity can be used as an analogue axis using their software.
