Minecraft - specifically older modded versions.

I went back looking for a minecraft thread (didn't find one) but noticed that from about page 9/10 of the forum ALL threads are locked. So even if i had found one, i could not have added this to that thread.

Anyway so it had been a few months since i last fired up my modded minecraft, and to my horror clicking on 'Forge' in the launcher did nothing, a CTD.

All other versions in my launcher worked fine (offline as well as on) but 'Forge' was dead. I then started to look on the Forge forums for advice, and realised the horror of that place, probably the worst run forum i've ever been too, and 90% unhelpful for the majority of posters it seems. Which is crazy when you understand how 'flakey' and odd-ball Forge can be to get it to work. So no surprises i did not find a solution to my problem there.

Next i started using search to find some hints around the general internet and did eventually get this one:

http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum...-forge-1-6-4-1-7-2-java-8-compatibility-patch

I think what had happened was that over the xmas/new year period i did a general clean-up and update on my mostly not connected Windows 7 gaming rig, and it seems my older version of Java i had been running for Minecraft 1.6.4 (yep that old - but i NEED it to play my modded version of Life in the Woods, the only reason i bought Minecraft in the first place!) got updated and Forge for 1.6.4 was one of the old versions that had the bug explained in that thread i found the fix for.

So just in case there are other 'Life in the Woods' minecraft players out there, or people wanting to keep and run older versions of modded minecraft, and you have been having CTD issues you did not fix, have a look at that thread as it fixed my problem. I would also add that above following the OP post on what to do, read the whole thread as the advice about not needing to delete the whole META-INF folder just FORGE.DSA inside it is true.

So thank the gods i can keep playing my old version which is just a perfect mod blend for minecraft imho :)

I still use old 1.7.10 version, never touched any new updates after it. I just have this perfect set of mods that are still 90% not updated.

Forge launcher became Curse then Twitch.

Pretty much. FTB (Feed The Beast) launcher was absorbed by Curse and became CurseForge, which in turn was bought out by Twitch and eventually subsumed into the Twitch launcher. CurseForge is still a thing, though - it's kind of a platform for building and sharing minecraft modpacks and last time I used it, it worked pretty well. But the actual app is all inside of the Twitch app now.

Anyway there's a version of Life in The Woods available through the ATLauncher:

Cool very nice info all :)

I have a confession re Minecraft modding in general, it scares the heck out of me! I mean i build and run huge modded Bethesda games, and tweak and mod-mod much of that too, i mod most games i can (as they are nearly always just better after doing so), but my experiences in getting Minecraft modded and running ok is a horror story compared to all other games, for a variety of reasons.

Some is the *technical problems side, but most is about simply trying to filter out noise and get the good helpful info you need. Minecraft is a game for children (and nothing wrong in that), but the modding side of it is the most complex and frustrating mess i've ever come across in a game. Pity the children!

*a quick example of what i faced:

http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/topic/23319-re-minecraft-forge-wont-open-for-164/

That was one of the few times i found the Forge place useful, and came up with the solution myself (i had to run the Forge installer inside my actual Java installation path), and it was a solution i had not seen given anywhere. Messy, nasty hacky modding for sure.

----------------

Anyway i can't tell any minecraft fan just how happy i am that i got it all working again. I built a specific modded game that would be good for the kids as they grow up, and i love Life in the Woods very much as the main base of the mod. I was really worried that my outdated and forgotten version of Minecraft (especially since the MS money took over) was dead forever!

Oh and @hunvagy, i did not migrate to Life in the Woods Renaissance in the end, a few changes made it hard to make compatible with a number of the other mods i need (as in i really need them!) in my mod pack. It is a shame Phedrun (the Life in the Woods modpack creator) is not around anymore to carry on updating her modpack.

AFAIK they changed the modpack functionality from 1.7.X or 1.8.X onwards, but funnily that's when most modders said "nope, we will not rework years of stuff we did" and the good mods never got updated to the new versions. So you kinda need 1.6.4 if you want some of the really good stuff.
