Newcomer / Intro Minerals: Difference between "Mining Only" and "Extraction"

Bauxite, Bertrandite, Coltan, Cryolite, Gallite, Goslarite, Indite, Lepidolite, Rutile, and Uraninite are all produced by "Extraction" while other minerals such as Grandidierite, Monazite, Void Opals say "Mining Only." Is this saying that the term "extraction" is referring to the minerals being refined (in your own refinery or NPC's) from other minerals and you won't get them through mining (surface prospecting or asteroid?)

Yep, "Extraction" means they are produced by Extraction economies and can usually be found for sale at such space stations and outposts. They are "mining colonies", to use the old descriptions of them. Some of those minerals will be listed as "Extraction (surface)". Such minerals can only be purchased from planetary-surface bases with Extraction economies.

"Mining Only" means no-one ever has them for sale, anywhere, and the only way to get them is by mining them yourself. The only way to "mine" for salable commodities is to equip mining gear and a refinery to your ship, and go zap some asteroids or ring-rocks.

Not quite the only way. You can also equip the usual weapons and some hatch breaker limpets and try to zap the miners. Of course those may put up a little more resistance than a piece of rock.

Well, I'd class it "the only legal, reliable way", then. :p

You can probably also find mined minerals by driving around the surface of planets in the SRV; eventually, the RNG will give you a mining installation, and you can raid it for mined goods, which might include some of the "mining only" commodities; I think that's currently the only way to obtain the "surface mining only" commodities like Jadeite. But I think those canisters might sometimes be marked "stolen" as well; can't recall, as I don't do much SRV driving these days.
