Hey I just discovered a way to stop Collector drones putting Jettisoned Cargo back in the ship. YAY!!!
I posted my solution in another thread but a buddy of mine suggested I start a new one the tip can be found.

The scenario: I am almost full and I find a big score of Pall or Painite, so I jettison the junk cargo like silver or osmium to make room for the good stuff, but the collectors decide to retrieve it and shove it straight back into my hold again Grrr.
Well I managed to find a work around.....
Unlike when retrieving ore, if you are moving when they are depositing cargo, the cargo container will be destroyed.
So now when I jettison cargo and I see that the collectors are retrieving the cargo I just dropped instead of the ore, just before they deposit it, I hit my thrusters (usually reverse) and the cargo containers go BOOM! The drones are still intact and continue on collecting. YAY!!! Also helpful if I notice they are bringing back stolen cargo that I don't want on board.
Until we get a setting on the drones, it is a far better solution for me compared to turning off the collector controller and popping the collectors. I only have 64 t of cargo space and this way I don't kill the collectors only the cargo. Also it is a better solution if the ore you want is near ejected cargo. Now the cargo is popped and they then get back to collecting ore frags.

He get rid of some apples to make space for the cookies.

I don't see the problem here.

I don't have a mining rig yet, but will certainly try OP's solution if I happen to prospect later on.

OP..when you jettison cargo, just select option jettison (abandon) and drones WONT collect it. At least it worked for me.

Hmmm I will try that next time I am out, but in the past it made no difference although there has been a patch or two since I tried To abandon rather than jettison.

Carrying Drones for mining and prospecting, as they go out, Cargo comes in. Sometimes cargo comes in faster than I am using up drones. if it is better quality ore and I am not ready to quit mining I will dump the low earning ore to make room (or fire off more prospectors to look around). Sometimes you just have to get rid of something when you have no room and a 50% Plat roid turns up so I dump silver or Osmium for the plat.

I tried that many times...did not work.
Best way to proceed: fly away, reverse, jettison your stuff, blast it with gimballed lasers...

"Jettison (Abandon)" didn't work for me either - they simply collect everything, yours or otherwise.

I hope for the proper fix soon - With the item targeted, simply press [insert key here] to ignore it.
That would allow me to mine a chunk (prospect) and not have collectors take it (it was only Indite, I don't want to waste time waiting for the collector to grab it!)

Also a 3rd "Jettison (Ignore)" might be nice to stop collectors re-collecting.

Simple stuff really. I'm sure we'll get there eventually, it's moved on a good way in 1.3.
I'm certainly making a pretty penny from mining now.

Yes I agree this is what we need.
In the meantime my method works without having to change to weapons and I can keep blasting the roids, weapons. If I see them going for the cargo I just use my thrusters to pop the unwanted cargo, its pretty painless.

Mine last 12 Mins I cant wait that long if there is Painite or Plat sitting there to make room for and I am on my last few drones, I will simply hit my manoeuvring thrusters while still doing what I need to do.

Well, you can discard things in station, which effectively deletes items. See no reason why we couldn't have that out in space. Realism? Well, where does it go when you are in station then? Magic teleportation beam to a recycle bin that you aren't notified about? Discard or ignore <item> option, either works for me.
