Ships Mines

I've not seen anyone discuss mines in a hardpoint. Are they useful? Or is the damage not worthwhile?
Now to hijack my own thread, I've cheated on my Asp, but have found its the one true ship for me. I just wish I could trade those 4 small hardpoint for 1 large. Lastly, what do people mean when they say "got back" from exploring? Back to where? I can't think of a reason to do this unless you have another ship in dock, which I wouldn't do. I'd sell it before setting out

Hi,
Mines are fairly useless against any ship at the moment. Small ships can avoid them too easily and large ships take little damage from them.
They also do minimal damage to shields and suffer from teleportation bugs (unsure if still the case, may have been fixed).

Asp is solid, if you are getting the Horizons expansion you get access to the Cobra Mk IV which may be another ship to consider, should fly well whilst having a Lg hardpoint. If not maybe one of the Federal Dropship/Gunship variants may satisfy your firepower and handling/flexibility requirements.

Back from exploring means back in human occupied space. If you go pretty much 200Ly in any direction from Sol you start seeing less and less stations/outposts. Eventually there are none. Go over ~1000Ly from occupied space and you no longer see NPC ships.

Not sure quite what you mean with the last sentence, do you mean exploring in general or what? A lot of people keep spare ships around in case of mishaps. If you mis-read your insurance and die its better to drop down from a Python to an Asp than from a Python to a sidewinder :p Although yes lots of people would argue a cash balance is better than a stored ship :)

That makes sense. I had no idea. I'm a bit surprised you can sell or trade in at full value so I'm curious why folks do things like sell the part and keep the hull. Maybe as an easy to spot place holder on the galaxy map. Thanks much for the info, very useful.

Ah right:
Ships sell at 90% of purchase cost
Modules sell at 100% of purchase cost

So basically if you can afford to keep the hull you can strip it down to cheap parts without selling the hull it will save you cash if you decide you want the ship again. It also means currently it doesn't cost anything to change your ship around and try different things :)

Yeah, lots of people use stripped out sidewinders for placeholders on the map, im hopeful they will allow an actual bookmark function soon but no word yet on if thats being developed :p

good to know, I've already sold a vulture and courier but will think twice before next purchase. Something like a python makes 10% a little more significant. Bookmarks should be implemented for sure. Thx for the tip
