Minimum system required

Hi,

I'm trying to help a mate out whos on a real tight budget by building him a PC to play ED. I read somewhere that it can be played on quite a low level machine. I was hoping to get the bits off ebay to build it but wondered what i should look for. Currently he has an AMD AM2 machine with 4gb of ram. I ran systemchecker on it and it says that the gcard, and cpu are no good. Could i upgrade the cpu and what sort of gcard should i look for. Cheers all. Hopefully i can get my wingman up and running soon.

From the ED website, I have an old AMD Athlon quad core with a GTS 250 running win 10 at sub 1080p, low detail settings with mid 40's frame rates that equates to this setup, it's plays fine and will likely improve as ED's optimisation continues

Computer Requirements
Elite: Dangerous is available now on Windows. You will be able to download the released game on Macintosh computers once it is available, at no extra charge.

MINIMUM RECOMMENDED HARDWARE SPECIFICATION:
Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
4 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD
Internet connection
SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS:
Windows 7.x
Windows 8.x

ok so i was looking at getting him an amd phenom x4 2.3ghz, an xfx 7870 graphics card with 2gb and another 4gb of ram. that should work then?

Hi,
What sort of brand and model of power supply are you using on this computer now?

My rig is a 3.4 phenom ii x4 and a 7850. Runs just fine with almost all the bells and whistles at 1080, can even manage eyefinity if I'm willing to make some sacrifices.

May find some drops in asteroid fields and the station interiors, but those specs should run it just fine.

I have it running on a 9 year old Pentium 4 Dell Dimension 5150 for when my son is using the main PC (which still isn't a gaming PC - it would never be called a "rig"). Admittedly it has a GeForce GT 610 graphics card in it (not expensive) and a bit of extra RAM. It runs perfectly fine for most things, graphics settings turned down (still looks nice) and only stutters a bit during some combat.

I was very impressed with how it handled on Old Faithful. I wouldn't worry too much about it. (You kids today... ;))

The games is not CPU dependent at all. I have a i5 @4.4 and it uses only 18% of my CPU most of the time. I would definitely spend money on a decent GPU if all he wants to do is play ED.

PCIe power connectors aren't really a problem, since you can get a molex (old hard disk power connector) -> PCIe adapters from nearly every electronics store. Or you can buy something like NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti as GPU. It's fully capable of running the game at maximum detail settings @1920x1080 and it dosen't even require external power leads.

I'll stick my oar in and say that my laptop, a creaking first-gen i5 with 6gb RAM and a 1gb 5870M runs it fine at 1080p at medium/low settings so I don't think you'll have a problem setting something up on a budget for your friend. I was worried that my laptop wasn't going to run it at all and that I'd have to play on my PC all the time but I couldn't have been more wrong. Loading times on startup are noticeably longer on the laptop but I can live with that.

The GTX 750ti is a great card if you can find one. It's pretty inexpensive most of the time.
If you already have a mobo you're stuck to that chipset. Look up the best cpu for that chipset if that's the case.
an aftermarket mobo and a good power supply are important. Both if they go out can take your entire computer with them. Don't skimp here.
otherwise spend the money on a newer processor it won't be much of a price difference.
if you keep it around last gen DDR3 mobos it will be easier to keep up with the upgrades later on down the line.
personally I only go Intel and Nvidia but if you're on a budget an AMD FX cpu is a good alternative. The GPU however I could not recommend anything other than Nvidia. I've had several AMD based cpu's and GPU's go out on me so I personally don't go near them.

Hi,
What sort of brand and model of power supply are you using on this computer now?

It's a branded (Antec or Corsair) 430W model, TBH with the 250 GPU it could do with a bit more in reserve but modern GPU's (600 - 700 series) need about 60% of the 250's power draw, so for a modern card 400 W would be fine with a sub 100 W TDP CPU

I need some advice guys.

I am ready to buy the game but still a bit afraid of the system specs I have.

Here they are:

ASUS laptop
Win 8.1
i5-3317U 1.7GHz
4 GB RAM
GeForce GT 740M 4GB

I suppose the videocard to be the weakest point, or is it CPU? Or everything? :)

All in all, the main question is whether the game will run at all or not. I could live with minimum graphic settings if needed.

Thanks a lot in advance!

I will second the GTX 750ti. It runs it beautifully and only set me back about $90US after the rebate.

The GT 720 that originally came in my machine ran the game well too though. But the i5 Quad and 16GB RAM may have helped that along. :)

I think that it will run fine on that system. I know that it runs well on an i5 and the gfx card looks to be ok, I believe that it is better than the on board gpu that is on a main i7 cpu that I use so happy gaming.

That's what I am thinking, exactly. Just wanted to be sure, you know :) Thanks a lot.

Interesting, was just about to press 'Checkout' on a new Nvidia 970 to replace my old xfired 6950's. Think I may not bother as I can still run ED on Ultra. Thanks.

It doesn't need a beefy system, even most craptops can run it.

I'd add a little more ram, 4gb is rather tight tbh, don't forget your system will eat close to 2gb just booting up ;)

Fair enough, even though I am always trying to optimise the OS (preventing resident programs to load except for the most needed ones and so on). Still, let us see how the game works. I have already purchaced and downloaded it, thanks a lot to everyone who replied here/
