You'll have to compromise on all the components but of them all spend the most you can on the graphics card.

I have no preference over either of them. ATI or NVidia. Its whatever meets my budget at the time and has the better rating at the time. Or is the one in stock tbh. I'm only considering upgrading as my rig is now >3yrs old as are the vid cards. Its about now I start my incremental upgrades to extend its life. I was looking at the vid cards first as a nod to the newer games on the horizon like Deus Ex etc. My rig still runs ED in ultra ok, esp now I have fixed an issue I had with a stick of ram. Which baffled me for a while. Was a tiny tiny spot of dust. can you believe that? 1 tiny speck of dust caused me mnths of random restarts. 1 wipe in the slots with some isopropyl and hey presto. Thanks to the guys at OCUK forums.
