mining and discovery scanner

Hi there I have eagle and have equipped a mining laser . To get refinery I need to drop discovery scanner. Isnt that dangerous and not wise thing to do ?

the d scanner is used for exploration. It discovers unknown bodies in the system for you to go near and use a surface scanner. Unless you are exploring (or want a small bit of extra revenue) you can get rid of it. They are fairly cheap to get back anyway.

You can live without a discovery scanner. It just means that if you jump into a system that is unknown, you will not be able to "discover" what the suns and planets are called or really explore it.
If you are going to be mining in a known system (where the system map shows you everything) then there is no need for the discovery scanner.
