Mining and radar echoes

I have been mining on and off for the past few weeks and noticed something odd today: radar sounds that reminded me of the SRV scanner. So I figure "space madness" and keep mining. Then I noticed certain roids look brighter orange than others. I fired off a prospector just to eliminate speculation, and it turned out to be a 40% painite roid. No big deal, I'm mining in major reserves, so not implausible. Then I noticed these brighter roids were consistently rewarding me with better metals.

Is this something real, or have I just gone madder?

(bear in mind every time I fire off a prospector I imagine Richard Dawson yelling "Survery says!" - Family Feud reference for those who may not know)

Oh, I hope you are right. Might just have to buy a light meter.

I was coming to the conclusion that faster rotation may mean something... but i've abandoned the thought.

Dawson. You Betcha.

Why were you mining in a Major ring, when there are so many systems with Pristine rings?
.
There are a few myths that have formed with mining.
. light coloured rings vs dark coloured rings
. spinning roids
. golf balls
. now you are adding light coloured roids
.
There may be some truth in some of them, but it is hard to tell.

Nah, it's your imagination. The 'roids that are physically closer to your ship are brighter, the ones that are farther away are darker. You can't use the size of the 'roids on your scanner to see if you're close - that's misleading. However, if it's brighter, then there's a chance that you're in close prox. and a bad move will mean a scraping noise.

there is also the myth that you might stumble across amazing riches and spark off a goldrush.
reality is that rings come in 4 flavors all of which are the same.
and there is never a goldrush
unless the dungeon master feels like pretending there is one.

not representative of actual game. (but I have been assured this is 2.1)

Closest to the system I like to call home. Did research and really cant find any pristine in relatively close proximity. No big deal, for me.

Thanks for the feedback. I figured it wasn't really a thing, just wanted to make sure.

Rocky 'roids have great graphic and sound effects and amazing work has been put to them. Too bad they don't have much value.

FD is so keen to throw top notch work on the "not worth it" bin.

You could be right. On the other hand if FD eventually introduces new useful features for asteroids (e.g. concealed but discoverable stations) I imagine they would locate those on the currently low value types to give players an additional choice to make.

Icy rings are similar, except mining doesn't work at all. But they are a spectacular place to get into a fight with randomly spawning pirates. Fun too, as the roids seem to be much closer together than in other ring types.
