Mining - Asteroid belts versus rings

I do enjoy mining with 1.3 but there are some areas I'm sort of confused about.

I was under the impression that with 1.3 mining at high res sights gave more metals than low res sights and asteroid belts are the same as the low res sights. But I've mined at all 3 and there is very little difference.

Also, there seems to be little difference mining metallic in pristine reserves, major reserves and common reserves.

Reading the treads on the forum, there are a lot of references to "platinum" sites or "palladium" sites. I was under the impression that all mineral/res sites refresh every 24 hours and their composition changes. ie: the same asteroid will contain a difference amount and type of ore each day. This was brought in to stop the exploit that you could log out and back in to refresh the site you were mining.

Any tips on what to look for in mining sites would be appreciated. At the moment I am favoring asteroid belts over rings as they have the same type of mineral and the 8 bin refinery I use, is perfect.

I think that the minerals you'll find at each type of location fit to a bell-curve of rarity. You'll get some chunks that are more rich, and some that are less rich, and rarely very rich and rarely very poor. If you're at a pristine metallic, it slides the whole curve up: you're more likely to get better chunks but you can still get bad ones; it's not a guarantee that you'll find great mother-lodes.

I haven't seen much difference between rings and asteroid belts, either. I like the rings because it's unlikely you'll run out of rocks to mine in any realistic time-scale. ;)
