Mining can ...

To be fair, I've had a couple of sessions where I've come up almost empty.
I guess it's just bad luck that I picked an area that didn't have any DC 'roids in front of me or I picked somewhere that somebody else had already cleaned-out.
Fortunately, I'd had good results beforehand, so I knew what is possible and it didn't put me off.

Like I just said in another thread, the 'roids are around so it's not worth going to a lot of effort to look for them.
Just start off 1000km or so from the hotspot marker and fly in a vaguely straight line toward it, checking out any bright yellow 'roids as you go.

On that note, another top-tip is, if you're mining in an inhabited system always go to a starport/platform and check the traffic reports.
If it shows a heap of ships visiting that system in the last 24h it probably means a lot of people have already been mining in the same place you're planning on mining.
Try to find a system where there's very little traffic and you'll know the hotspot probably hasn't been picked clean already.

Good advice - cheers!

So I tried again ... this time just popped to a nearby system with “common resource” rings as I just wanted a quick hour to see how I could do. Found a Low Temp Diamond hotspot and dropped in right at the edge then flew towards the middle ignoring anything but the brightest yellow asteroids on the wave scans. After an hour, I found 3 that could be detonated and was pleased to find it not too tricky to hit the blue zone. Two were diamonds and the third was alexandrite. Got around 15 tons of each which netted me about 14 million - again, just at my local station didn’t go looking for best prices.

So - far from amazing but certainly getting there. Also now at around 100/500 tons for Selene so that’s progress too.

Yeh, I know I could just go out with standard mining lasers and mine any old stuff for her but I wanted to make it interesting and maybe earn some moolah along the way!!

That’ll do me for tonight but not as dispirited as I was earlier. Many thanks to all who chipped in with advice, thoughts or just polite ribbing of my “toys out of the pram” moment. It all helps! :)

Left the mining gear on my Krait ... will start looking for those Void Opals again next time.

This has been the one thing about ED that's bothered me from the beginning and frankly I don't understand it.

One of the issues in the game (a major flaw imo) is that there's little to nothing in game to guide a player to doing any of this the correct way.
The game needs a tutorial with an AI mentor for each career choice. If you choose to mine, you should be able to initiate a mentor who can advise loadouts and give some examples of finding hotspots and how to determine the core rocks. Of course they cannot reveal everything, so just to get the player in the right direction, outfitted properly and not feeling like the last one in on the joke every time.

Those Low Temperature Diamonds, Alexandrite etc. cores are good for practice how to place charges fast and effient way.
After you will practice this, there is the second thing which also needs a bit of time and practice - to recognise the VO core. Yes, there are YT videos and some web pages, but you cannot learn everything just from videos.
I know what I am talking about, the VO mining was the first thing I tried when I returned to ED few weeks ago. It is hard at first, but as soon as you will succesfully find your first, second, third etc. VO core, you will know how they look. Remember, there is only one size, one 3D model which can be VO core. Also, you need to see it on your own graphic card, how they looks when you use the scanner. On my NIVDIA Geoforce GTX 780 Ti, those VO asteroids are bright yellow/gold with some black lines and when you are coming to them and scan them again, there is a green color between the gold/yellow.
As soon as you will learn how to recognise them, it is a piece of cake to make milions/bilions.

Pretty sure all core rocks in the ice look the same and you won't know if they are VO until you use a prospector limpet on them. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Slight differences in them in different icy rings, some have a longer look and looks more like ice on the extrusions rather than the normal white.
