Newcomer / Intro Mining - Collector Limpets & Size 7 slot

Here's another quick tip: when laser mining, don't be afraid to bump your nose right up against the asteroid. The closer you are, the faster your limpets will collect everything. You're unlikely to take damage unless you run shieldless or continuously faceplant at high speed.

  1. Does anyone fancy sharing their Python Mining Ship builds for reference please?
  2. Also; how do you work out if you have enough power to fire mining lasers (or any other power hungry module) continually, rather than having to let them cool down after a while?

Finally - I'd like to say a big "thank you" to those of you who keep an eye on the new player section and are willing to share your hard won experience. Not just in answering the questions I've posted, but I've learned loads from reading other threads too. Your time is much appreciated o7
  1. Yes.
  2. A combination of trying stuff in Coriolis and trying it in the actual ship modules are loss free to try unless you engineer them in which case you will lose a few materials.

Heres my mining Python. Note the big Guardian FSD Booster, it takes up a big slot, but you will be amazed how far you can travel without a scoop with it fitted. Swap it for more cargo if you have a FC or close selling station.

Cheers for that. I can see it's time to read up on how to unlock the Guardian and Engineering update...

I have always thought that you only need 1 limpet controller for all the types of limpets used - When you synth limpets you can choose the type from the Inventory menu on your ship - (I need 10 prospectors and 20 collectors) -
Why does it take 10 iron and 10 nickel to make 4 limpets? - I can see 1 and 1 for each limpet, or even 2 and 2, but 10 each for just 4? -
That is for construction of limpets, - What is used for fuel? - ( Sulfur and phosphorus? Like refuelling the SRV?)
Along with a multitude of other areas in the game, this seems unfinished - Dropped in and forgotten -

You forgot the "should" in "I have always thought that you only need...".
So 2 and 2 is ok for 1 limpet but 2.5 and 2.5 is not?
The provision of multi-purpose limpet controllers is a recurring request.

IMO:. A fully multipurpose Limpet Controller would be overpowered, but I'd like to see some combinations available eg being able to switch between Prospector/Collectors or Refuel/Repair. At least we don't have to carry individual supplies of each kind of Limpet!

A couple of suggestions:
  • Your collector distribution means you are losing out on a lot of cargo space. I would suggest switching places between the collector controller in your 6-slot and your size 3 cargo rack. This will only cost you a single collector limpet but gain you 56 tons of cargo space. The difference between 8 and 9 limpets is irrelevant for laser mining with up to three medium lasers and does little for sub-surface mining as well. The extra cargo will allow you to make larger hauls (if mining is fixed - currently cargo space is useless as there is nothing to haul).
  • Switch the positions of your prospector controller and the refinery. You will lose only two cargo slots for an additional prospector, which will speed up the prospecting process significantly. Particularly when laser mining.
  • Throw away the mining lances and replace them by medium mining lasers. Mining lances really have no advantage over small mining lasers apart from the range possibly letting you prospect manually before using a limpet (which loses you fragments). When laser mining you really want to be as close to asteroid as possible anyway so range is not much of a plus for the mining process in itself. Your distributor should still be able to handle it.

I used to have more cargo space, but I get bored quite fast and an extra 56 tons would take too long. Up til the patch (grrrr) one prospector was enough, since almost every rock had what I was after in it. Have to see what happens there.

1) No, I hate Pythons, sorry.

A little delayed in replying, but why's that? Reading up about the Pythons, they seem to have side by side Pilot / Copilot seats. I've had one ship like that before and resold it the same day because it felt "wrong" not to be sitting on the centre line.

As my "cash cow" Tritium trade route is no more, I'm actually starting to think a little more before just buying a load of options and selling off the ones I dislike.

.............

Did you not like the Cobra then? There are lots of off-centre pilot positions - wait till you get into a FDL - that really is annoying. ;)

It didn't seem as noticable in the Cobra, maybe because it's a small ship?
I almost bought a FDL this afternoon, but decided I probably wouldn't get enough use out of it at the moment with my "hippy peace-nik" play style :)

Cobra and Python seem weird. Imperial ships also have two seats but at least you're sitting on the correct side. :p
FdL is not as much about sitting off-centre, but about one very annoying window strut sitting right in front of your face.
And yeah, FdL can only do one thing - kill stuff. It looks nice and all but if you just want to buy a luxury yacht, just go for an Orca.

Depends on whether you were trained as a fixed or rotary wing pilot. ;)
Well, when comes to my R/L "career" in flying, I was trained on a tandem airplane so I prefer stick in right hand and throttle in the left. So much so, that whenever it was possible, I prefered driving from the right seat as most planes I've flown had the throttle in the middle.
Choppers at least have the decency to give each pilot their own cyclic.
I've never flown one, unfortunately, I wish I did when I had the chance, but they are my favourite thing in any flight sim so I'm getting my thrills there (damn you MFS2020, you better introduce some)

Erm anyway - I'm used to flying from the right seat is what I wanted to say. :D
