Y'know it just donned on me that I don't think I've ever mined once in Elite. Is it a good way to make money?
Also, if I had to take a guess, I'd say keep it light to jump to pristine rings, max shields to avoid damage from interdictions in between mining and selling.

i tried it last night. discovered I don't have the patience for plus an anaconda noc sneaked up on me, yes i know, and literally handed my rear to me. i think edge of the bubble might be a better place so may try again one day.

I would like to use my Corvette for mining.
Never mine in a res site. Find the right ring and just fly at it until you get dropped in. If you stay away from the res sites no npc spawn
My friend tried mining in a Hauler, while I provided escort. Just watching him chip away and not find anything worth refining for around three hours in different pristine areas, turned mining off for me. It's something people like, sure, just not my thing.
But I guess the Cutter could be viable for it. Big cargo capacity for large hauls and carrying tons of limpets, you can get a pretty high end Refinery, Prospector Limpets and the ones that bring the fragments to you.

There's a certain distance you can go after you drop into an RES where NPCs won't spawn but you'll still get the "I'm in a RES" bonus, but I forget the magic number...

You'll never find any good materials this way. RES's actually increase the amount of really expensive metals and minerals you find. Hence the "Resource Extraction Site" name. Part of the whole risk/reward thing.

Pristine just means lots of stuff left, it's the Metallic bit (or at a push Metal Rich) that's just as important. You can go to a Pristine Rocky and find lots of stuff - all of it rubbish!
I mined the asteroid belt in LHS 3447 (Pristine Metallic) and went from a Sidewinder with 20k worth of mining kit to a Cobra in less time than that! Took that Cobra off to Frey and first 15 minute mining trip I hit Painite and made half a million - lucky yes but 3 hours mining for dregs means you've done something wrong.
Great build! Set this up last night and did a couple hours mining. Had loads of fun pulled about 2mill in a good pristine metal ring.
