Mining - ED's Red Headed Stepchild

There are many ways to play this game. Not all activities deserve a ranking system.

Considering where the game places emphasis on commander activities, there seem to be 4 primary areas of activity:
1. Exploring
2. Trade
3. Combat
4. Mining

Mining is the only significant activity with no ranking system.

Consider how important mining is to this game:
> All high tech civilizations require large supplies of elements and minerals, especially metals, to build cities, space stations, and ships, all obtained via mining.
> Mining produces resources that are major sources of commerce (trade).
> Mining is important as a source of missions offered to pilots.
> Mining creates the environments needed for bounty hunting (i.e. - Resource Zones).
> Mining creates most of the opportunities for pirates to ply their trade (i.e. - Resource Zones).
> Mining, properly done, can produce a significant income for pilots as well as allow them to rank up with factions.

Originally, when I first began to play ED, I did not consider mining as an activity or profession. However, to obtain the services of several Engineers, I had to properly equip a Python and learn how to effectively prospect and mine various minerals and elements.

I studied tutorials that other commanders generously posted on how to equip a mining ship, how to mine effectively, and eventually became a reasonably good miner. However, having read extensively on how "professional" miners do their work in the game, I still have a considerable way to go to match their results, which brings me to my last 2 paragraphs:

Mining is an activity that is essential to this game. Mining is performed in spacecraft and requires a considerable amount of pilot expertise in the tight confines of asteroid belts and planetary rings. It is a highly specialized activity that requires study and practice to achieve proficiency. The commanders that earn large amounts of credits from mining have perfected it to an art form.

In summary, for all the reasons I've stated, I recommend that Frontier Developments implement a ranking system for miners. It would add a new dimension to the game and offer another route to achievements and recognition for those commanders that are goal focused and wish to have another avenue available to achieve Elite status from the Pilots Federation.

Mining is already covered under trading though, as far as ranking goes, isn't it? All mining does is allow you to obtain certain commodities for max profit (minus your initial setup costs requiring a return on investment and your operating costs such as limpets, repairs etc), that you sell at the commodities market, thereby contributing to your trade rank already. I don't agree that mining needs it's own ranking. Let's wait and see what improvements Frontier has in store in 2018 shall we.....

I completely agree with the OP. Mining has been sadly neglected, including some serious bugs that have been around since 1.4.

Mining is completely different to any other "profession" in the game. It certainly isn't trading, yet it's the only thing that mining is measured on.

I am eagerly whatever improvements are to come.

I think there deffo needs more depth to mining. The biggest problem is there is no real use for the raw materials except to sell them in ED. Say a miner was able to develop these materials into modules of other commodities. I think its been briefly touched on with the engineers but doesn't go far enough. Adding a real reason to mine in large volume other than enjoyment will help mining a lot.

Currently profitability isn't particularly good for mining either as you can make more exploring if thats your goal.

Imagine you could mine in large volumes and link with other miners to manufacture something that you can then sell or use. That would give it a real purpose. Especially if it was something that was perishable with use
