Mining Explosion Damage - beyond 1km

I was deep core mining. I backed off just beyond 1km. And yes I judged this by targeting something on my side of the asteroid. The rock blew and a huge chunk of rock came hurdling right at my type 9. It wiped out my shields and 20% of hull. Has anyone ever had this happen?

I survived and all was ok but I was a little surprised. I assume this is a sort of random event... Or something that could just realistically happen when you are blowing up random asteroids full of fissures. I kinda liked it in that way. In other words a very realistic possibility but low likelihood. Just adds a touch of realism.

I would have thought that I just had missed my distance if it weren't for the huge chunk of asteroid that I clearly sawing come straight at me as well as the amount of damage it did.

I've had sub-core fragments hit my hull at relativistic speeds. Only time I've experienced a rebuy while mining. I think what's happening is its treating the collision as a collision with the entire asteroid instead of just a fragment.

RNG. Usually 1 km is a safe distance from sploding rox, but there’s nothing special that happens there to make you safe, so always be ready to dodge. You HAD to see the fragment coming toward you. Also moving 4 pips to SYS would have been a good move too.

Put 4 pips to shields before the rock explodes to protect against that.
Does that have any effect? AFAIK pips only improve resistances not total shield strength, and getting hit by a rock is probably absolute damage.

<Edit> For people idly browsing: I got this wrong.

Nope, PIPS have nothing to do with resistances
They do apply a bonus to the raw value of the shields. 4 PIPS in shields means about 2.6x more shields than 0 PIPS, then the resists do apply over this increased absolute value

And this really matters when we talk about collisions (and ramming damage) since it does absolute damage to both shields and hull.

Never had it happened to me. I mean i never witnessed any piece of broken asteroid being hurled any direction.
The only damage i got was due to the blast wave itself, but it was rather minimal and being at 1km away from the asteroid means no damage at all

Sure i'ts been a while since i last did core mining on a consistent basis, but when laser mining i do crack a core when the opportunity arise, hoeever i'm not really into core mining lately.

Ah, OK, I do that in future. :)
