Mining for idiots

OK I've got my mining laser and limpets and refinery and I've even managed to mine an asteroid and collect the bits.

Now what?

The refinery just complains that there are no available bins when I click on a collected chunk (which I would have thought would have refined it and stuck it in a cargo bin).

Confused as **** right now.

You mine fragments that yield a percentage of ore. The bins in your refinery can each take 1 type of ore at a time. The tutorials and guides on the forum explain the rest.

Have you too many limpets taking up cargo space??

Once your refining bin is at 100% the ore should transfer to cargo as 1t of that ore, if you have limpets or ore taking up cargo space nothing will transfer to cargo. A good percentage of limpets to cargo space is 75% so if you have 100t of cargo space take 75 limpets and that will allow you to prospect/collect and refine.

You will find that even if you have cargo full you can take a few extra tons of ore in the refining bins if you vent correctly. I find that I vent a lot of unwanted ore to get what I want and this gives me an extra 4-8 tons of ore to cash in.

Thanks. I think the issue I've been having was that I thought I needed to manually trigger the refinery to work on the ore. Whereas after reading up on it, that part is automatic and you only get involved to dump ore if something better comes in or freeing up cargo space.

Still not sure why it says no free bins when you click on the unrefined ore unless that is just strangely positioned feedback for the player.

A 4A Refinery has 10 Bins - a Metallic Belt, however, now has 11 different Ores after the addition of Samarium and Praseodymium.

So even with the best Refinery existing and free Cargo space, one can eventually run out of free Bins.
Typical cause : i.e. Indite and Gallite occupies Bins along with other Metals, causing 10 Bins to be in use - then a chunk containing Bertrandite comes along, blocking the Refinery.

Other than that, Server Lag can cause distinct pauses in the process - leaving you with repeated Messages like "Refinery Full" over several seconds and stalling the Mining Progress with no obvious reason or Solution at hand (other than waiting).
