Mining. Has anything changed in 3.0?

Is there a reason I should give mining another shot now? I do need raw mats. Are they available to mine or am I still forced to scour planets in the SRV?

Mats are available for mining in asteroids and have been for a while. The problem is you don't get a breakdown of the mat % in the asteroid, only a "Materials" rating of high, medium or low which basically means what your chance is that you'll pull one in a fragment. It would be nice if the prospector limpet also displayed the % chance of mats by individual mat type, like you can see on the system map view of a planet, but I don't know how they'd fit that info there. Maybe there is a guide on the google that describes the breakdown by asteroid/ring type, but doesn't appear to be anything in-game.

If you want just mats you are far better off doing planetary prospecting. Unless you also mine, in which case, do mining and get mats as a side bonus.

Use EDDB to filter for Metal Rich Bodies containing the elements you want (you can specify more than one), then go to the body and land either on the outside edge of a crater or near the central mountain (if there is one) of a crater. Choose a direction and try to keep heading in it, as nodes spawn with the same or similar logic as USSes (in that once spawned they are persistent until you are out of range).

On the bright side, for 3.0, where I used to only crack open golden outcrops, mesosiderites and metallic meteorites, nowadays it's worth cracking open everything you see.

When you say "nodes" are you refering to the random rocks scattered around? What do the outcrops, mesosiderites and metalic meteorites look like?

Rocky rings now have more precious yields, like rubies, emeralds, etc.

Mining right now is a good thing to do if you feel a little burnt out and just need some time for reflection and what you want to do next and make some money while doing it if you know where to look.

I call it Zen Mining..:D

I found a place that is loaded with 3 P's and can make a decent profit for some chill work.

Surely you are joking?!

To OP,

I have indeed spend a few hours mining in an Anaconda and I must say, it is much more fun than before, not to mention that you can now sell Platinum for around 40k and Painite for around 140k in Boom systems. All in all I think I made around 5-7 million per hour.

Additionally being able to tell your limpets to ignore elements is great, no more venting, as things you deem unfit wont be collected in the first place.

Lastly you can gather quite a good amount of materials this way and while not all mats can be found, this is where a trip to the material traders will help out.

So they finally added Space Oysters, Space Elephants and Space Trees? WOO! Was about time!

That stuff's been in since 2.1

Have you updated your game? ;)

I could tell you (but I on my phone, maybe later when on desktop), but like I say it really makes no difference. All natural formations (prospecting nodes) are on the bottom half of the scanner, so follow any wave on the bottom half until it appears as a blip on the radar. Target, shoot, profit.

I must confess, I haven't visited a rocky belt for a long time...

My hope was to incite a horde of commanders all decending on rocky rings, only to come Out with rutile and bauxite :D

Yesterday I read a clever idea to simply remove the refinery if you're just keen on materials.
Surface prospecting is a lot more effective than mining for mats, but mining is more fun imo.
:)

I wish they would move Painite in there from the metallic rings. Then rocky ones would have a purpose for precious stone hunting, like ice belts with diamonds. Metallic belts will then be the ones with the highest average for bulk mining. Makes sense, no?
