Mining – How It Improved Over the Years, Why, and How to Expand upon It

Go into the right hand panel/modules...deactivate the prospector limpet controller, it kills the currently deployed limpets. Same for unwanted trailing collectors too [yesnod]

This helps. The issue I had was launching them into a group of rocks looking for specific minerals but couldnt figure out how to kill them so I can keep searching.

Just to add to the ideas for temporary "Gold Rushes"

Maybe have a system or cluster of systems have special RES that spawn high % of all the high value mining commodities but only for a short amount of time, say 2 weeks.

There could even selection of new commodities that only appear in these rush.

So there is a Galnet article saying a mineral rich part of a Ring has been discovered, this could be in inhabitable space or nearby in the wilds

And a New RES or GES (Gemstone Extraction Site?) type is spawned in those systems only that one can find asteroids with Painite, Jadeite, Moissanite , Opal , Spessartine, Rhodolite , Corundum & Grossular, thought not all at once

Give these very high value at Service and Tourism Economies, and more so when in Boom.

Maybe a selection of up to three of them, and different group would be selected each time, and tie it into changing Fashion

So the GalNet article could talk about how jeweler made of Rhodolite is all the rage in Alioth High Society this month, and so Miners are rushing to PLEIADES SECTOR HR-W D1-57* where Rhodolite rich asteroids can be found, and sold for high prices at Service and Tourism Economies star ports

Then next month it might be about how in a Popular Dreamware Medieval Fantasy Soap Opera Character was seen wearing a Tiara with Corundum & Opal and so licenced reproductions are in High demand in Service and Tourism Economies star ports, and mining for the gemstones have double in the rings of WISE 0350-5658*

Etc Etc.

This giving in game information of what to mine, where to look and where to sell

*systems picked at random for example and may not contain any mining locations

Just fire another prospector.

If your prospector controller is class-1, it will only control one limpet at a time. So when you deploy another, the first one explodes.

I used to class myself as a deep space miner...until I realised I couldn't find any element in the mining table 10,000 light years away that I couldn't find 1 jump from my home station
This is one thing that I hope that does come with 3.4. There should be new and unusual gemstones, undiscovered vacuum life forms, or rare radioactive isotopes in distant undiscovered systems. Actual reasons for distant prospecting. I'd become an explorer if these were added to the game.

Mining is scheduled for an upgrade in the Q4 update: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/397639-Elite-Dangerous-2018-Roadmap-Regularly-Updated

Mining - Improvements to the way we detect and extract resources. A miner's toolkit of modules and capabilities, for more options, variety and choice when we're in deep space. Trying to invoke the feeling of Wild West prospecting through jeopardy (crises, unforseen challenges to get the rewards) or through the concept of hitting the motherlode (deep core blasting, an entire special asteroid for big rewards). Trying to make mining a fully fledged career

This won't be worth anything without mining drills.
I mean who seriously enjoys shooting a rock with a laser when a more hands-on approach using drill heads crushing into the rock, making the entire ship shake could be a possibility?

Take a look at how space engineers does the mining.
Feels way more engaging having to countersteer the drills rotation while your entire ship is making noises,
instead of sitting at 50m+ distance, sipping your tea while holding down a button.

This sounds good but my fear is that it will be like finding HGEs... Sometimes searching for hours with little to and nothing being accomplished besides burning time and eating up fuel. I want to end a session feeling like I accomplished something. Achieved a goal. Credits can be one thing but even if you don't make that much, you still need to feel like you accomplished something.

My biggest issue in the game right now isn't the C&P, or the engineers it's the utter lack of non wing trade missions and the lack of variety in them. Everybody says go to a Boom Extraction/Refinery system and yee shall find tons and tons of mining missions. Absolute bunk. I stumbled on them in a system that is in Retreat and I rarely find them in a Boom system at all.

The other thing is why wouldn't there be missions to get silver or samarium? I rarely ever see these. Since the osmium missions go for 10 to 20 times the cost of the commodity board, why not these? These would make great missions for a small ship. Good profit, easy to find, do a couple of these and you feel like you did something.

For that matter, why is it always get 100-1000 tons of gold, computer part or what ever. Why wouldn't you put out a source mission that says bring me 10 tons of silver, 5 of gold and 4 palladium? It doesn't make sense.

On a good note it's much easier to find good prices for your mining items. Heck, even the retreat state was giving 120k for painite, 50k for platinum and 13k for osmium.

You possibly alluded to it earlier.
- When in a wing, all wing members share in the benefits of the limpets.

i.e.
- a prospector limpet sent out, all in the wing can see its results
- a collector limpet sent out, all in a wing with the cargo scoop open can receive the collected goods.

this would (in my opinion) help boost both the mining and (further boost) the Wing mechanics
