Mining... How it should have been done...

Firstly, just for the record... It's a bloody game, not a time sink for wasting your evenings... Well maybe that is what it is for you... Personally, I expect more than that.

Hence, I don't want to spend an hour or more searching for an asteroid I can blow up!

I would have preferred a 'drilling missile' with an explosive charge that can tunnel into the asteroids... ANY ASTEROIDS, with a hold_and_release trigger to stop drilling at the correct depth and right position within the asteroid to get it to blow up correctly - the less accurate you are then the less core content remaining. Still skill based, still exciting, but without the hour+ of time wasting if blowing up a few rocks is your thing.

Every asteroid should be able to be blown up... Not just one in a Zillion.... I've spent two evenings trying to find just ONE bloody asteroid I can blow up in beta (before and after the beta mining modifications). I didn't find a single one, despite looking in multiple hot spots. I'm not wasting a third when it goes live tomorrow. Way to go FDEV. Wasted my evening(s) again.

What you have implemented is another time sink for muppets! Call yourselves developers... [where is it]

I think the restriction on not having every asteroid destroyable is more based on game engine limitations than the desire to make you waste your time hunting for them.

I think what they want you to do is mine normally and If you find an asteroid to blow up you can do so. Not search for that asteroid. I look at it like it a reward. It seems to be 3 grades of mining now. Normal, Blowing stuff off the asteroid and exploding asteroids.

Good suggestion. But I think Frontier doing well with their idea.

I don't think so. I think it would depend on how dense the asteroid was. A really dense asteroid could be impossible to drill into.

Or it more Common sense gameplay. Not I always win Gameplay.

Possibly, depends upon your implementation I guess. I think FDev wanted it the way they have done it... Because that's how they think.

It wouldn't be a great stretch to have half a dozen explosion models and overlay the asteroid graphics on top of these...

It would be interesting to see just how many explosion models they have actually implemented... If only you could find the bloody things! My hunch is its very limited and that's what they really want to hide.

That can't be it. If that was what they wanted they wouldn't have created 2 types of mining with no crossover or progression.

Errrm, so you suggest that we can just blow up any asteroid in exactly the same way. How do you think people won't see your idea as a time-sink / grind-y?

FD's has some variation, and even a little skill in recognising motherlode asteroids, where as yours is:

* see asteroid
* make asteroid go boom
* next asteroid

I found loads of asteroids to blow up in beta. And I only spent a couple of hours testing the features.

Didn't actually mine anything though, just blew stuff up. Lol

I was watching Down to Earth Astronomy, a YouTube creator, mine in the Beta, he recommended looking for exclusively tear drop shaped asteroids to explode. I think DTEA is on to something because in the Discovery Scanner stream with Chris Gregory, Mr. Gregory was showing the process of creating an explodable asteroid and that example asteroid was also tear drop shaped. Since the process of creating an explodable asteroid is extremely time consuming, I suspect that there are very few viable candidates to explode. I would watch or skim through that Gregory stream and closely observe the shapes of the asteroids he uses to describe the process.

shhhhhhh... you want frontier to figure it that they left a flaw that we can exploit and then Nerf it? zip it!

And yet another marginally insulting and abusive rant demanding things are made easier. I think you might do better if you considered how you address the very people you are trying to influence.

Tend to agree with ya OP.

You could try X4. It's got spacelegs too.
Bugs; they eat chairs whatever the chair.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single developer in possession of a good compiler, must be in want of a harem of bugs.[big grin]

You're doing it all wrong.

Yes, very wrong. I had no issues finding asteroids to detonate (on average 5-10 mins to locate an asteroid, each one nets you 6 million + credits if you get the explosive yield correct, you can even visually spot the fissures in the asteroids.

The whole point is to look for asteroids that are weakened by fissures, was never about blowing up every asteroid you come across.

@Susanna - This isn't the first time you have rushed into a profession, then complained that you are not very successful. Relax, take some time to learn how others are doing it, avoid any future frustration.

This, supposedly mining upgrade, is sadly short on Quality of Life additions for miners. Yeah, there's some new buttons to click and it looks pretty good now, but that's not QoL.

What I mean by Quality of Life for mining:

  1. Fix the refinery, so that it doesn't lock up
  2. Stop displaying the incorrect "Refinery Full" message (it makes the info screen completely useless when mining)
  3. Remove the unnecessary delay when deploying a limpet - particularly prospectors
  4. Balance pass over collector controllers (is 128 tons for 4 limpets in a class 7 controller reasonable?)
  5. Add some engineer upgrades that are actually useful to miners (currently the only useful engineer upgrade is weapon focused distributor, as module weight or integrity are irrelevant to miners).
  6. Rethink the mechanic of having pirates spawn every time you drop into a ring - especially in remote systems
  7. Balance pass over the ore yields in the different ring types - particularly icy, which is less than 1/3 the yield per roid compared to metallic
  8. Large and Huge mining lasers and the new mining tools
  9. Balance pass over the distributor drain and heat generation of mining lasers
  10. Hotkey to cycle targetting prospector limpets.
  11. Prospector limpets that move a tad faster. It's a bit of a joke in the Clipper, Orca or Cutter to sit and wait in front of a roid for your limpet to catch up.
  12. Ability to package partial tons of an ore instead of venting it, automatically reloaded into the refinery when a bin has been allocated to this ore.
  13. Balance pass over the profitability of mining compared to other professions
  14. Stop limpets picking a suicidal flight path, or at least limit how many times a limpet will suicidally be sent after the one fragment
  15. Graphical overlay of roids displaying the axis of rotation
  16. A non-random way to search for roids with a particular mineral
  17. An indication of the direction of rotation of a planet's ring would be handy.
  18. Merge some of the new tools

edit - I admit there there is one mining QoL thing in this upgrade. That's the display of the material percentages in rings after a DSS probe
