Newcomer / Intro Mining in a Viper MK IV

Please I have read all the posted guides and they all seem to have been written some 3 years ago. I happen to have 2 of these as I love the ship. I want to give mining a try before I go and blow a ton of CR's on a Type 6 or a KeelBack. But would really like the Cobra MK IV for this venture. So Please could some one point me in the right direction with updated info on a mining setup for the Viper MK IV. From what I see there aren't all that many discussions about mining or I haven't found them. Seems it's either Combat or Exploration or nothing?? Anyway any who may help Thank You.

Just an old guy trying to regain his youth!!

Do you mean a ViperMkIV or do you mean a CobraMkIV? The Viper is a bit limited in slots but yes you could fit a 2A refinery (6bins) two 1A collector controllers (1 limpet each) and two 16t cargo slots. The Cobra MkIV has more (and bigger) slots available so would be better for mining but it is limited qualification / availability.

If someone were to hold a gun to my head and tell me to outfit a Viper Mk IV for mining, this is how I'd do it.

Of course, your mileage may vary with the Military Composites and the Hull Reinforcements, especially since if I'm going into a RES, I'm going to put as much armor plating as I can to cover my reduced shielding.

Thank you for this. It is a big help. As I stated I just want something to try mining with, without spending a ton of CR's. If I like it, I will probably go with a type 6 or a Keelback.

The main problem is that smaller ships do not have the slots, or size of slots, to mine effectively.

Cargo space, limpet launchers, a 4A refinery, all of it is hard to shoehorn in on ANY of the smaller ships.

It's like they designed mining to be bad. Collection should be via some handwavium thing that sucks in the fragments, rather than having idiotic and slow (and sometimes suicidal) limpets chasing things around. It would probably be best if mining didn't even involve ANY collection limpets unless you want them to collect element materials for synthesis! Heck, build the suction into the refinery!

If mining was cargo/refinery, plus a couple hardpoints, that would allow even the smallest ships to do it. Sure, an Adder wouldn't be great, but it could have a handful of prospector limpets, two cargo racks and a size 2 refinery, and a shield for bumping against asteroids. That would make mining into an actual career, and even leave a few optional slots for combat-related modules, or just people going full bore cargo like they do now.

Except not filling up on limpets before heading out, instead just taking along enough for prospecting. Or keeping a single collector limpet for grabbing elements.

10,000 credits obtained on my savefile through mining, it'd take quite a bit more than 3A Collector Limpets to convince me to go mining.

It's like fishing. I hate fishing.

Fair enough. But using the right gear when fishing helps as well. Have a go in a decently equipped Python and it's a completely different experience.

You'd unlock Selene in about two hours, for a start.

That is what mining used to be - blast off fragments and fly about drawing them into your cargo scoop. There were tomes written about efficient techniques for fragment production and scooping. Limpets makes life so much easier.

If you want to it still can be done without limpets. - Off you go -- FETCH! ;)

for the price of a mining keelback, you can d-rate an AspE, which is the "smallest" ship mining is fun for me ... have such a mining AspE on my third account.

while i love a viper mkiv for planetary stuff, you'd be better off with a cobra mkiii - it is fast enough to run shieldless, so you can have 32 t of cargo, 1A prospector, 2A refinery, 1A collector and 3A collector.

It is possible to use a viper mk IV for mining.
I used my Viper 4 when I was unlocking selene jean (aka the painite in the hunt).

It's very possible to try out the mining basics in this ship, but it's not a good mining ship.

First: install mining laser on small hardpoints only (your gear won't be able to keep up with more/better mining lasers)

Second: Install A grade refine (size 3 minimum) and a small single prospect module. If you can find a collector module that can keep more than one limpet active at a time BUY IT! For the rest buy cargo modules, fill them 70% with limpets.

Don't ever mine in a REZ. Just find the spot in any ring system (the darker ones have metal and, wink wink, painite)
Fly slowly towards a spot in your ring of choice and drop out. Almost immediately a couple of ships will spawn, if you don't have anything of value they'll leave you alone and leave, otherwise deal with them at your discretion. Most of the time local law enforcement starts patrolling also. Don't worry about pirates in general in systems with medium/high security.

Goemon, Thank you for this advice. I happen to have a cobra mkIII, just sitting in storage doing nothing. might give this a try!

Gamsir, Thanks for the advice. I don't want to use the viper for mining, just wanted to try mining out with what I have, without going nuts spending cr's on something I may not even enjoy. The last 2 posts have helped alot and thank you all.

The thing many of us forget is that we only lose money on ships and consumables modules can always be sold for the purchase price so experimentation is not going to be a problem credits wise if you can fund the purchase.

aRJay, want to thank you for your helpful advice. I went and got a Keelback for increasing my hauling ability and as I am always being interdicted, wanted firepower in I fail. so soon as I have enough spare cash will give the Keelback a try.

if you are often getting attacked while mining there a couple things you can do.

1: once you jump into the zone and ships start to spawn. just boost away till no more ships are near you and you should be left alone

2: wait till you get scanned before you start mining.

if you are getting Interdicted in super cruise just get some chaffs launchers to hold them off till you can jump out again.
but the best thing is to get good at avoiding it by NOT submitting! takes practice but its fairly easy once you get the hang of it.
