mining in solo??

thanks again. And yes I wanted the 10 bin but not available where I am. shrug. can't have everything I guess. ty again for being patient. I have played for couple months or so but not since 1.3 and new stuff.

excellent help!!! two more and I am off to try again. so to have 2 drones operating at one time I am assuming I just click secondary fire button 2 times...

Correct.

...also assuming 2 drones won't fight over who gets what? ...

Correct.

...I have a 6 bin refinery. is that good enough or should I delete something higher and get bigger refinery?

It's all good - you can just focus your collection on the more valuable types (Painite, Platinum, Palladium, Gold, Beryllium, Osmium), and slough off the rest.

Having an 8bin refinery just means you can collect an additional 2 tons, as the 100% collected bins will convert to tonnes once your cargo bay has room again.

sigh. not what I was hoping for but then....... this may not be the game for me after all but will see if I can survive first I guess. thx for replies.

Don't give up. LHS 1212 is a good mining spot and I have not been bothered at all. This may help out.

1. Retract your mining laser
2. Put pips to your engine and system
3. Head to clear space boosting as often as you can
4. Supercruise once you are not masses locked. You DO NOT need to have a system or anything targeted.
5. Relax, breathe and find another spot to mine.

Also since you don't like combat there is Mobius. I guarantee they are more than happy to help out and protect you. A lot of us switch between solo and open so there is no need to feel bad about it. You bought the game, you play it the way you want to play it. Good luck

Useful thread this, lots of things to do with mining I was not 100% clear on answered.

I had another question though..if I may? :)

I was wondering if it is possible to find really high output metal rings if you searched very hard/ went to unknown systems etc? Or even perhaps are there areas within a ring that might yield lots very high value metals, like every chunk is Gold etc? Or is every ring, no matter where you go in the Elite universe, pretty much the same variation of low yield/high, low value? In other words, if you spend the time searching, might you find really high value rings that no one has found yet?

If you look in the System Map, it will tell you if the system has Depleted, Normal, Major, or Pristine reserves. This affects the % of the content of each fragment.

I found a nice little High Tech system with Major Metallic reserves - the bonus missions to turn in metals for 10X the amount help the profit margin.

OP, thank you so much for asking your questions as I have been asking myself these same things. I also don't much care for combat and how this game is constantly hassling me. I will probably also be trying my hand at mining after I turn in my exploration data and the info in this thread is quite useful; I've copied bits and pieces of it to my Evernote note on ED mining.

You might also find this thread has interesting and useful tidbits: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=155761

It's too bad we have to mine the forums for "how to" info, but that's just the way this is.

It's going to be difficult but not impossible to find them. What you're searching for is Pristine Reserve Metallic rings as Forlorn says.

Each asteroid in a ring will have a different material mix. So the first asteroid you come to may have Indite & Gallium, the next one will have Silver & Palladium, etc...

Which materials you find in each individual asteroid is determined by random chance, modified by the type of ring. Metallic rings have a higher probability (though certainly not 100%) of yielding high-value ores - Silver, Gold, Platinum, etc... After that are Metal Rich rings, followed by Rocky rings at the bottom. Icy rings can't currently be mined, so ignore those. That doesn't mean you'll never find Gold in a Rocky ring. You might; you'll just have to hunt long & hard to find it.

The reserve status of the ring (Pristine, Major, Common, Depleted) determines the %. So a gold/silver asteroid fragment in a Pristine ring may have 40% Gold, 35% Silver, which means you can mine one ton of each metal with just 3 fragments (with a little left over). In a Depleted ring, that same fragment may only have 9% Gold and 12% Silver. Meaning you'll need 10 or 11 fragments to mine 1 ton of each metal.

Actually. If you plan on just Metallic rings/Fields. Then you can just do the 9 bin. Its 3 million cheaper and 9 bins account for ALL of the ores that will drop in a metallic area.

As an added note. if you're solo, don't goto a RES point. Just go out in the middle of the ring you need away from the RES. Zone in. Kick in after burners, travel liek 10km away from where you spawned. and start mining. You'll never see a pirate.

I do this, mining in my Lakon6. Plan on getting a Lakon7 later. Its decent enough that if you go at it for 45- 1 hour, you can still pull in 700k to 1mil.

My lakon6 also uses dual 1A limpet controllers, a shield, and the 4B ( 9 bin. ) refinery. 9 bins is all you need for metallic rings. It holds everything that drops without venting.

You dont need to go to the the extraction sites, just go anywhere random in the ring, possibly noone will ever show up.
I thought the same thing. Went on the opposite side of the ring system with no RES anywhere near. Dropped down and within 2 minutes I had two NPC's buzzing around me.

Hey guys, I have not given a serious chance to mining yet (too many things to do with PowerPlay and the current CGs!) but here is my build:
http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=702,H9WH9WH7yH7y01Q0Wg,314s6Q6u5K4s4s6k,07207207203w0YY5PU

My strategy:

Step # 1,Find a good spot
- Enable silent running
- Find a spot with no pirates hanging around
- Fire a bit your mining lasers, check the fragments
- If your temperature rises too high, disable silent running for a few seconds
- Repeat until you find some precious asteroid

Step # 2, Collect
- Make sure there are no pirates around
- Fire your lasers until capacitor is empty
- Launch a collector drone
- Enable silent running
- If your temperature rises to high, disable silent running for a few seconds
- Repeat until asteroid depleted

Step # 3, Get the hell out
- If a pirate show up, boost away toward another empty spot
- When far enough, go to step 1

The max boost speed of the Cobra allows you to run away from anybody.
The lighter your ship and modules, the faster you are. Empty top speed is around 455m/s. Full it drops to 425m/s.
Rank A power plant and no shield help to run cold.
I just hope NPCs (and players) will not get attracted by my drones and fragments floating around...

=> Tell me what you think guys? My goal is to be able to mine at a good RES while players are around (during a future mining oriented CG for instance?)...yep, I like challenge and do not want to mine peacefully at a location with no danger.

I am confused. I found a system with two pristine reserve metal rich planets. I went to both of them and moved close enough to get mining laser splash. did t his with several roids in both planets. not one gave me any chunks. I thought maybe someone depleted this one so did it with several roids far apart. same thing. I can't believe someone(s) depleted all of the roids. what am I doing wrong? I was able to mine in closer system, not metal rich pristine and all worked fine.

I doubt the rocks are depleted, that sounds more like a buggy instance and/or connection issues.

One thing to note is: The quality of the belts (ie. pristine, major etc.) is system-wide. Meaning, if it says "Pristine" in the info bar, then all the belts in that system will be pristine. It seems obvious, but I originally was looking at every planetary ring when I first started out.

Also worth a mention is a perfect mining system next door to Lembava. It boasts a pristine metallic/metal rich ring about 18Ls from a station which has a high demand for metal. You're also next door to a high-tech system and now also a faction HQ (Lembava), and close to a system belonging to each of the major factions, giving you flexibility for mission running. It's worth the journey if you're serious about mining.

I found this gem way back in Beta when they introduced mining, having scoured the galaxy map for days trying to find a decent spot. I definitely struck gold here! And palladium, and platinum, and ...

Well anyway, since PP was released and Lembava made a HQ for Li Yong-Rui, it's pointless keeping this information to myself now, so for all you roiders out there, here is your nirvana.

GCRV 1568

Happy mining, pilots. :)

I have noticed some variation in how long it takes chunks to break off. Not sure if this is network latency, random, or some hidden property of the asteroid.

Make sure you have 4 pips in wep so you can fire the laser for as long as possible - small mining lasers can take quite a while sometimes.
