Engineers Mining in space for mats?

Hi,

When you mine in space (like from a ring around a planet) can you
convert the refined elements into mats for engineering? All I know
is once you get like a hundred, it converts into a ton of cargo which
you can sell.

Thanks.

When mining you will collect two things: ore, which gets refined into cargo, and (less often) mats. The mats go straight into your mat storage. The ore or cargo can't be converted to mats. If you only want mats for engineering you don't need a refinery.

You also have the option to go "mining" without a refinery, but with limpets on rocky or metal rings, just for materials. This way, limpets will ignore the ore and focus only on materials. But, although possible, this is not the optimal way of farming materials.

NB only mining with a mining laser yields materials: surface/subsurface and core deposits don't have any. Choose asteroids with "Material content: high".

I've started going to Resource Extraction Sites to "mine" manufactured materials. Just kill the pirates, stop the ship and release the collector limpets. Then trade. Seems to work quite well.
