Ok guys quick heads up about mining.
I was a beta test player merc player, so i got the eagle on release...What i did was sell the eagle, which gave me 40,000 credits.... i then just slightly pimped my sidewinder to give it a jump range of 12..instead of 8ish starting jump for a sidiewinder.
I did this on the day the game went live, so i restarted the game with a personal wipe.
No fuel scoop etc just upgraded jump drive etc...i then headed out from my starting position, and scanned with the basic scanner....till i arrived at a fed station approx 70 jumps from my original home....sold the cartography stuff...which netted about 110k...
Bought a hauler, 2 refinary bay...dropped the shields...1 basic mining laser...and noting certain systems(pen and paper) close to this fed base...went hunting the roids which i had scanned down...
Next system to the Fed station...(which most explorers whould map as a 2 sun system with a dodgy outpost..and nothing regards exploration worthwhile crdits, i ham having a blast with a basic hauler.
Two belts in a neutral system, both pristine...(asteroid belts)...and just pop out plat, pladium and gold....downside is that the npc pirates can be bloody aggresive...popped once with 3 shots from an npc pirate(ok no shields myself) but a pirate anconda!!!
So far due to me not watching what lands in the belt i have lost 2 haulers, and approx 90k of ore...
On the positive...3 hours mining in these risky belts has netted me over 500k
so take the time to wander off the beaten track with a sidewinder..then look at the "White Transit Van" the over looked simple hauler!... 1 mining laser, drop the shield gen..more cargo and a 2 can refiner....money is out there to be made!
