Mining isnt good!!!!Ok so I THOUGHT

Ok so i thought i would give mining a go as i have done all the other profession to some degree! Spent two hours figuring it all out and nearly filled my hold then got blown out of the sky by a pirate not very good career choice so dont bother!

Results may vary...

I made my first millions via mining and killing any npc pirates that swung by, but I never once died to them.

Yeah well i thought after that pirate bit id give it another go (slap me now)! Ok so i figured out that just firing at the rock untll you had loads of rocks to pick up was the way forward! Ok fd this is where your physics break down and all that science stuff you go on about comes to nothing!
How is it that rock you rip off vanish after a set time surly whilst im in the instance they should remain. Nothing more annoying thatn getting 23m from the rock only for it to vanish!
Is anyone else getting this or is it a bug a stupid game feature !

Ok so mining is an unenjoyable aspect of this game like the others tho just not this!

I would mine if it werent this cumbersome. But currently it is not designed very well. The scooping is bad and slow. The chunks stay in game for very little time. I guess tractor beam wont happen which I would love as a late game mining tool.

It's intended, in order to keep the number of objects the game has to track down to a reasonable level.

If you target a 'chunk', you'll see it has a 'hull percentage' like a targeted ship, and that percentage will gradually fall until it reaches 0% and the chunk will despawn.

Seems to take around 5 minutes.

Yeah they do disapear too quick. I usually get them all, but i feel that urgent stress which i think could be fixed. If its about getting too much objects at the same time then just delete ore if too many are being created. If we pop off 10 ore they shouldnt disapear until we leave the instance, or we mine more where the game deletes the initial one continuosly as we break off more and more. I hope FD can fix this.

Well I disagree OP, I think mining is fine. But that's just me, and maybe mining is just not for you. Not everyone will be suited to all professions - just like real life really. But we have multiple ways to earn credits, so give the mining away and go back to trading or bounty hunting. Give it another try once we have the drones to make recovering fragments easier, and things like mineral scanners or identification of mined out asteroids perhaps.

could you imagine going to an extraction site in open play, where a few players have been going through the different asteroids ignoring all the low income minerals and have literally thousands of white specs on your radar because of it? I'm glad they disappear after a while, that many objects to keep track of would bring pretty much any computer to a crawl.

Sometimes usability has to take a backseat to playability

Since clearing my saved game on release day, I've made all my credits from mining alone.
I find it quite relaxing and fun, I'm not super-rich but I have enough to buy the things I need, currently at 132,647,355cr

One question... Did you have a shield or did you decide to load up on extra cargo racks for all that lovely platinum?

Remember in X3 where you could set your ship to auto-pilot and pick up the floating rocks? Just a thought.

Well 'fixing' it would imply it's broken, which it's not - it's by design. Just don't break off all fragments in one run. I normally do 5-6 then collect them and then break off the remaining fragments. I find the asteroid I've just mined is the one that appears on the scanner (at full zoom in), but that may not always work I guess. Maybe down the track Frontier could tweak the dwell time before the fragments fade though.

You forgot how many times it would slam itself into the roid?
Btw it was very slow.
Ohh those good days with a HQ full of Nvidium ;)

wait until you see the scoop on the python, it'll make you long for that sweet sweet autopilot slowness!

Mining can be therapeutic, one problem I found with it was being able to identify which asteroid you just mined. I found that breaking off a chunk, and if it's not the stuff you want leave it and move on to the next, that way you could see the ones you have already tried.
Unfortunately that suffers the problem that the chunks de-spawn too quickly, the chunks should stay until you leave the instance.

The other problem is being scanned by pirates and then them attacking you just to take your hard earned cargo. I was mining in a hauler, consequently only one weapon! This leaves you vulnerable, I had a few encounters where I had to mine a pirate to death, made difficult by the fact that the mining laser doesn't have a targeting reticule. This can be fun though, because you just have to fire and use the beam to line up on the target. But can be problematic when the system authority vessels turn up and try to help, you have to be very careful not to hit them. :D

Compared to my bank balance you ARE super-rich ;)

Yes i agree with you on this m8 the lag would shut the game down! So how about they do away with the fragment thing job done!

this is where teaming up players is needed. miners & protection. protection get the bounties plus a cut of the proceeds, miners get to work in peace.
