Mining lasers have no impact on ICE roids?

maybe you can if they put in a x-mas special mission to make and sell snowballs :p just kidding of course, as of right now ice 'roids aren't minable, there is a small hint to that extent somewhere in the news feed (or was)

Rock can be embedded in ice, but I guess these are frozen liquid chunks out in space?

Odd that they have these floating around then, I mean, they are not all that pretty to just look at lol

If they had metal in them, they wouldn't be labelled as ice in the game, they'd be labeled metal. That's a definition in game, like a pulse laser is called a pulse laser because it's not a multicannon.

An ice asteroid is called that because it contains nothing to mine. If it did, it wouldn't be called an ice asteroid.

Could be all sorts of frozen gas in them, methan, ozon, etc...i don't know what plans FD has with the ice roids, but i somehow doubt they're just there for cosmetic reasons or as a source of water.

Will have to wait and see, i guess.

in Beta we only had ice asteroids at some point and the NPCs were mining them. I hope (and I'm pretty sure it will happen) that Frontier makes them a bit more useful than what they are now. As to WHY they are in the game, my guess is that they were formed automatically during the galaxy generation.

ON the GalNet news go to the bottom and read the mining tips, its say there you cant mine ice roids for whatever reason, I forgot

Last I heard it wasn't planned, but even if it is I wouldn't expect to see that until mining gets its overhaul. Check the ddf for what's proposed on mining, but grain of salt and all that.

You misunderstand me, I'm not theory crafting or anything like that. I'm relaying developer comments from back when mining was implemented. There's no way I could ever find the exact post or patch notes, but I'm not making things up, I'm just letting you know what the devs have said.

You cannot mine Ice. Of course anything can change, but if it's an Ice asteroid, it cannot be mined, by design.

Elite is fairly distopia-esq, I dont think selling water would be out the question universe wise.
The snag is you would need it super-compressed or something else the quantitys wouldn't work.

It's a bit odd that water is not a commodity, it's pretty much the most valuable resource in deep space. But then again, not much in ED is a plausible extension of the future.

Ah, alright, sorry then....my impression was that ice mining was one of those "not yet implemented" features.

May well be, but not that I've heard. Like I said, anything's possible in the future. They specifically removed the NPC ice miners though, and commented about it, but you never know!

I'm virtually certain without looking through the forum that the Devs have plans for the ice mining feature.

Then surely it is not ice ;)

Definition of ice: frozen water, a brittle transparent crystalline solid.
That's a fairly strict definition. Realistically, "ice" can refer to any frozen substances resembling water ice. I mean, take comets for example. Their nucleus is typically made up of all manner of frozen gasses (methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia, etc.), and yet is still typically referred to as "ice".

Well there's a snag with that, too: Water is strange in that you can't really compress it. Typically, when you compress a gas it turns into a liquid, and when you compress a liquid, it turns into a solid. The trick with water though is that its solid form (ice) is actually less dense than water. That is, it takes up more space, not less. This is why pipes burst in the winter. When the water inside freezes, it takes up more space and the pipes can't handle it.

On topic: It would be interesting if you could mine from ice, but with a different type of laser, and for different types of resources (gasses, perhaps?). It would give an advantage to larger mining ships (able to bring several different types of lasers), and would make things a little more varied.
